Pinchin teams across Canada came together for our annual 2026 Team Up to Clean Up (TUTCU) initiative, volunteering time to help clean and care for our local communities.

This year’s event made a strong impact across our Canadian offices. 24 offices participated in collecting over an impressive 5,200 pounds of waste, demonstrating Pinchin’s ongoing commitment to building healthier, more sustainable communities.

One of the most common challenges encountered during redevelopment projects is the underestimation of soil and groundwater contaminant risk pathways. While contaminants may be identified during environmental due diligence, the migration of those contaminants through soil, groundwater, soil vapour, surface water, or utility corridors can create risks beyond the original source area.

By evaluating how contaminants behave beneath the surface, developers can better anticipate challenges related to vapour intrusion, off-site migration, groundwater impacts, construction activities, and long-term site management requirements.

Did you know: projects near water in southern Ontario require special permits?

Projects located near water features must be compliant with new regulations. Ontario’s Provincial Planning Policy, released in 2024, requires set buffers around all southern Ontario wetlands, including rivers, lakes, streams/creeks, bogs, fens, and ponds. Pinchin’s Environmental Science’s team is ready to support your project with wetland delineation flagging and mapping to help identify encroachments and identify any permitting requirements early on in the planning process.

When environmental contamination is identified, the next step isn't just determining how much is present. It's understanding who or what could be affected.

A Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) evaluates potential risks to people, while an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) focuses on the potential impacts to plants, wildlife, aquatic organisms, and ecosystems. Although both assess exposure pathways and contaminant behaviour, they serve different purposes and often work together to support site-specific remediation and risk management decisions.

At Pinchin, our Environmental Risk Assessment team helps clients navigate complex environmental challenges through human health and ecological risk assessments, conceptual site modelling, remediation planning, and regulatory support. By understanding both human and ecological receptors, organizations can make informed decisions that protect health, the environment, and project outcomes.

Did you know that Ontario is home to one species of native lizard? The Five-Lined Skink is easy to recognize with its flashy blue tail! Unfortunately, this beautiful lizard is endangered in parts of Ontario.
