Crazy! We have been buying a lot more than selling lately.

But that’s not to say we haven’t been selling a lot of jobs either!

We just seem to keep getting busier and busier as this year goes on.

This week we started a couple new decommissions consisting of over 500 sections of pallet racking between the 2.

These 2 projects are just a couple amongst the many other installs and relocations we have going on at this time.

Next week we start 2 more large decommissions again.

Lots of decommission on the go!

Current market prices for steel on the rise!

STEEL PRICES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF! 🚀 And try explaining that to a customer!

One of the hardest conversations we’re having right now at rack.ca is explaining to customers that the price we quoted them back in the summer is no longer the price we can sell it for today.

Imagine receiving a quote, taking your time to review it, getting your project approved, and finally deciding to place the order. Then you find out the price has increased by 23% or more!

Now imagine being the person who has to explain that to the customer. 🤦‍♂️

We understand the frustration. Nobody likes unexpected price increases, especially when they’ve already budgeted for a project.

But here’s the reality: steel prices have increased dramatically, and when the cost of the raw material goes up, the cost of manufacturing the finished product goes up with it.

And before anyone assumes otherwise, that 23% increase isn’t us adding more markup to the order. It’s the increased cost of the material itself.

We’re in business to make a profit, just like everyone else. But we also believe in being honest with our customers and being upfront about what’s happening in the market.

The difficult part is that we can’t control the price of steel, and we can’t continue selling products at yesterday’s prices when we’re paying today’s costs.

It’s frustrating for us, frustrating for our customers, and certainly not the kind of conversation any salesperson enjoys having.

The lesson? If you’ve received a quote for pallet racking or other steel products, don’t assume that price will be there forever.

If you’re planning a project, let’s talk sooner rather than later.

Our crew travelled from the GTA to Kanata, and in just one day, they had the entire system installed and ready to put to work.

Well, the cat’s finally out of the bag.

Canada has officially started calling out what many of us in the pallet racking industry have been watching for years.

Chinese steel racking is being dumped and subsidized into the Canadian market.

And now we’re supposed to celebrate provisional duties of up to 13.1%?

Give me a break.

13.1% is a joke.

Anyone actually working in this industry and competing against this stuff knows that doesn’t even come close to addressing the pricing gap we see between some imported Chinese racking and Canadian made product. Canadian manufacturers pay Canadian wages. Canadian taxes. Canadian overhead. Canadian engineering costs. We manufacture to Canadian requirements and employ people right here at home.

Then a container of cheap imported racking shows up and we’re expected to pretend everyone is competing on the same playing field.

We’re not.

And here’s the part that really gets me. There are Canadian companies that love wrapping themselves in the Canadian flag while turning around and selling imported Chinese racking because it’s cheaper.

Not informing clients. No integrity.

You can’t have it both ways.

If your business model depends on buying artificially cheap imported steel and undercutting Canadian manufacturers, don’t turn around and tell everyone how much you support Canadian manufacturing.

At Rack.ca, we’ve supported Canadian made racking for years. But let’s compete fairly.

If China can manufacture a comparable product, ship it halfway around the world, pay freight, handling and import costs and still land it here dramatically cheaper than Canadian manufacturers can produce it, then asking questions about how that price is possible isn’t protectionism.
It’s common sense.

The CBSA and CITT action is a step in the right direction.

But 13.1% isn’t the finish line. In my opinion, it doesn’t come remotely close to correcting the pricing imbalance we’re seeing in the real world.

Our client flew in from Calgary Friday afternoon to come see the material in person and close the deal on an order for over 240 frames, a few thousand beams and wire mesh deck.

The team had to quickly cut down the 240 frames to 10’ tall, pick and pack all the beams and wire mesh decks.

Thanks to the team for working over the weekend to prepare this last minute order and have it ready for pick up on Monday.

What an amazing weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park this past weekend. 

The NASCAR Canada LJR race team, featuring driver Larry Jackson, whom we proudly sponsor, was kind enough to spare some of his time for an interview with a long time friend of rack.ca, James Doyle.

James Doyle came to us years ago when he was in his teens looking for some racking for his auto garage to help create more space and organize his car parts and tools. We were happy to help.

James is an up and coming entrepreneur and we thank him for sharing this interview and his shout outs to rack.ca.

We are definitely loving the colour of the back of rack security fence panels.

The colour definitely makes them pop!

Pictured is one of our recent projects over the last week.

A smaller project, but they all add up and most grow up to be bigger projects later on down the road.

It’s been an untypical August. Busy, busy busy!

The rack.ca teams have been slammed with installs, relocations, decommissions and a scary number of buy backs.

The team is already 3/4 finished the pallet racking dismantle part of the 290k sqft decommissioning.
