While current fire safety design relies on prescriptive approaches, these methods have many limitations.

To address these issues, rational fire design approaches are gaining support in various countries.

However, there is a need for increased awareness and training in these methods, as most engineering programs do not include fire safety in their curricula.

Structural Fire Engineering from EPIC Training aims to introduce rational design approaches for undertaking structural fire safety design.

What if a 3D printer could help tackle microplastics in our water?

Engineers at the University of Waterloo have developed a low-cost, customisable 3D-printed filter that removed up to 90% of microplastics from water in their research. The design uses stacked filters made from a biodegradable polymer, with nano- and micro-scale pores and a pressure-sensitive adhesive that improves microplastic capture without blocking those pores.

The researchers see potential applications in both household drinking-water systems and industrial water-treatment plants.

Their next challenge is improving the capture of especially small particles, with microplastics under 10 micrometres proving more difficult to trap.

It’s an interesting example of how materials engineering, additive manufacturing and water treatment can come together to rethink an increasingly complex filtration challenge.
