Here's an instance of how laser scanning can complement the design and engineering processes. The mechanics of most vehicle underbodies are intricate, and the curves and geometry of rear diffusers are organic, making manual measurements challenging. To overcome this, we utilized laser scanning to capture detailed and accurate data of the rear diffuser and the entire vehicle underbody for this Infiniti Q60S. The data gathered offers dependable insights for both design and engineering teams to create high-performance and cosmetic products and prototypes.

CAD modeling and development is a critical part of exterior upgrades and motorsport projects. But before CAD drawings can begin, we need reliable, highly accurate, and consistent data. Having data we can trust means fewer troubles in later stages and higher quality products.

A while back we completed a full exterior laser scan of the 2019 Subaru WRX STI - including underbody data. The data is precise and high detail; allowing designers and engineers to extract the necessary mounting points, contours, and measurements for product development. These scans help demonstrate the powerful capabilities of combining strategic transportation design thinking and metrology-grade laser scanning. What you see here is actually only two scans, but presented in various ways. First, you have the door card itself, with all the luxury upholstering and fabrics. This scan captures all the fine details, down to the leather stitching and ergonomic buttons. The second scan has the panel removed, revealing all the inner workings of the door, such as cables, wiring, speakers, and most importantly, fastening points and areas to be avoided. Overlaid together, and you can see where things line up, where things go, and better yet, extract precise measurements. This effectively means the data can be used for projects such as designing new cards that are perfect fit. Or for motorsport projects, easily conform the roll cage to the doors and fabricate new door cards with the negative spaces of where the bars will fit without interference. Electronic and audio upgrades can be added easily with cleaner results.
