We opened our doors this week to the Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario, welcoming members in for a firsthand look at how the equipment they rely on every day is designed and built.

Plenty of great conversations, lots of curiosity, and a good reminder of why we do what we do supporting the people on the front lines of sterile processing.

Real talk: is the hardest part of your job really the technical skill, or is it just... doing it exactly the same way, every single time, no matter who's on shift?

Devices are getting more sophisticated. Workflows are getting more detailed. And every time I look into where SPD teams actually struggle, it comes back to the same thing: consistency. Not a competence issue — a complexity issue. Lots of steps, lots of people, multiple shifts, more requirements piling on every year.

Curious what this group thinks: what's the one process in your department that's hardest to keep consistent no matter who's running it?

Curious to hear from the SPD/endo community: which sink-side step takes up the most time in your day?

We know that a big chunk of the work happens before the endoscope being ready to be reused again. You, sterile techs are handling leak testing, filling and dosing, manual brushing, channel flushing, soaking cycles, and rinsing steps, all while following the manufacturer's instructions for use.

That's a lot of steps to keep consistent, shift after shift. The AutoSink™ can program most of them automatically, following the scope's IFU the same way every time.

Wanted to share a recent install — an Ohio GI department just added two new AutoSinks to their reprocessing area.

What stood out to us: the whole process is guided and recorded step by step — leak test, brush, individual channel flush — so techs are walked through the IFU every time instead of relying on memory alone. Nice to see a workflow change that actually helps with consistency and patient safety, not just speed.

Curious how other departments are handling documentation for their reprocessing steps — anyone else using guided/recorded workflows like this?

Every SPD has a story like this. WHAT'S YOURS?

An installer once left a rag inside one of our heated cabinets. It caught fire.

Here's the part that made our CEO laugh telling it: we'd built that cabinet so fireproof — almost paranoid about it — because we'd worried about exactly this scenario. So when the cabinet came back to us, all we had to do was clean off the soot and swap the electronics. It looked brand new.

That's the thing about designing medical equipment — you're not designing for a clean lab test, you're designing for a real department having a real, messy day.

How much time is spent manually brushing instruments? ⏱️

Manual cleaning is essential—but it can also be one of the most repetitive and labor-intensive stages of medical device reprocessing.

In a case study conducted by Trevor Duffy, instruments reached the “visually clean and ready for the next stage of reprocessing” benchmark in:

🧽 12.8 minutes using the traditional process
💧 6.2 minutes using the AquaBrush process
