In recent years, hydrogen has managed to move out of its niche and onto the political main stage. Not just in North America and Europe but across the world, the energy sector is bracing itself for change as we move from the fossil fuel age to a renewable era.
The pressure to shift to a low-carbon future is turning the economy inside out is mounting, propelled forward by the environmental crisis and looming net-zero deadlines for governments and corporations worldwide. The process is happening fast and going through unprecedented changes that are profoundly disturbing ‘business-as-usual” and increasing, the need for new pathways to create public value. It’s only early days as we still don’t have a functioning hydrogen market. Except, that is, if we look at hydrogen as an industrial gas for conventional applications (welding, medicine, etc.). Preparations are underway, however, to set up a trading platform that will enable hydrogen to be bought and sold in large quantities.
The upshot is that we need a lot more solar power plants and wind turbines. Hydrogen will be essential in bringing this vast quantity of green power to the different energy sectors.
Admittedly, it’s a pretty basic description of the energy transition. However, it does plainly show that hydrogen, far from being just a megatrend, is something that the energy sector simply can’t function without.
With over two decades of action in full effect, the Protean core team found that the solution sits at the intersection of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) regulation, resilience in the face of volatile market behavior, and disruptive technological innovation. We defined the forces shaping the future of the energy industry.
We learned that only startups are capable of massive business model innovation. “The industry thrives on brave and visionary people.” Startups have a big advantage due to their ability to iterate and adapt their model as they are in the process of creating an initial business model design.
Thus, we developed a proprietary technology development and corporate operation adaptive methodology, that summarizes almost all the necessary characteristics that for the next years to come will win the development race between hydrogen and all the other long-duration technologies to see who can bring down costs and demonstrate large-scale feasibility.
