How many square feet does a family really need for comfortable living? One of the most common questions we hear is: “How big should our home really be?” You’ll find plenty of numbers out there for minimum space, but minimum doesn’t always mean comfortable. A home should work for you, not just today, but for years to come. Here are the ranges we generally see as truly comfortable.
For a family of three – two adults and one child –1,500 to 1,950 square feet. Ideally one primary bedroom, one child’s bedroom, one full bath with a tub, a powder room, dedicated laundry, a mechanical room, storage, and a walk-in closet.
For a family of four – two adults and two children – 1,850 to 2,370 square feet, one primary bedroom and two children’s rooms, two full baths, dedicated laundry, mechanical room, pantry, and plenty of storage space.
For a family of five – two adults and three children –2,250 to 2,900 square feet, one primary bedroom and three children’s rooms, two full baths plus a powder room, a dedicated laundry, mechanical room, pantry and extra storage, and a spacious kitchen and living area.
