We’re proud to support the Downtown Nanaimo Harvest Festival this Thanksgiving weekend.

Hosted by the Spirit of Nanaimo Society the free, family-friendly event will bring the community together at Maffeo Sutton Park for an afternoon of activities, entertainment, local organizations, and plenty of fall fun.

The festival will also support the Community Warmth Initiative, with optional donations of coats, blankets, and new socks being collected for community members in need.

If you’re downtown, stop by and enjoy the afternoon. We’d love to see a great turnout for another local event bringing Nanaimo together.

Some of the best team conversations happen away from desks, drawings, and project meetings.

Each summer, the Newcastle team and our families get together for an afternoon by the pool. There is pizza, plenty of time to catch up, and usually more than a few kids keeping everyone busy.

Taking time to connect outside the office helps strengthen the relationships we rely on when the work gets busy. It also gives us a chance to celebrate the people and families who support our team throughout the year.

If you're looking for a place where the people matter just as much as the projects, we're always interested in meeting great engineers. We currently have opportunities in both Nanaimo and Courtenay.

If you've travelled through the Comox Valley Airport recently, you may have spotted us.

Over the past year, Newcastle has been growing its presence in the Comox Valley. What started with a new office has become something much bigger: building relationships, supporting local projects, and becoming part of the community.

Our team is living and working here. They're riding Cumberland trails in the summer, skiing Mount Washington in the winter, volunteering at local events, and helping deliver projects that support the region's growth.

The Comox Valley is a special place. It offers the opportunity to build a meaningful career while staying connected to the lifestyle that makes Vancouver Island unique.

We're excited about what we're building here and grateful for the warm welcome we've received from the community.

Sometimes the best part isn't crossing the finish line.

The Newcastle team had a great time at this year's Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta. Newcastlers were there representing Newcastle and cheering on the creative (and occasionally seaworthy) boats that make this event a local favourite.

We're proud to support the Silly Boat Regatta and the volunteers, participants, and sponsors who continue to make it such a unique community tradition.

While attendance was a little quieter this year, the excitement certainly wasn't. The FIFA World Cup Final had plenty of people glued to the nearest screen, and we can't blame them for taking a break to catch the action.

Thank you to everyone who helped make another great event possible. We’re already looking forward to seeing what next year's crews come up with.

Engineering has a way of changing how you see the world.

Earlier this month, Dan Pedersen spent some time travelling through the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. Along the way, he visited the Ferrari Museum, the Ducati factory, and a few legendary racetracks, all while proudly representing Newcastle.

One thing surprised him the most. Despite travelling thousands of kilometers from Vancouver Island, many parts of the landscape felt remarkably familiar.

What stood out even more was seeing how different communities approached planning, transportation, and the efficient use of space. It's always interesting to see how engineering and thoughtful design help shape the places where people live, work, and connect.

Travel has a way of offering a fresh perspective, and we're glad Dan brought a few stories home to share with the team.

Welcome back, Dan!

A year ago, we had the opportunity to present Alistair Day with Newcastle's $2,500 engineering bursary at the School District 68 Awards Night.

Today, we're excited to welcome him to the team as a summer co-op student.

Alistair is currently studying engineering and joined Newcastle at the beginning of May. Some of you may recognize the last name. His brother, Max Day, completed a co-op term with us in 2023.

Supporting future engineers has been part of Newcastle's commitment to the community for more than 14 years. Seeing bursary recipients continue their journey and gain hands-on industry experience is one of the most rewarding parts of that investment.

Welcome to the team, Alistair. We're glad to have you here.

Ready for the next step after your EIT?

We’re looking for a Project Engineer (PE-E2) to join our Nanaimo or Courtenay team.

This role is a strong fit for someone with a few years of experience who is ready to take on more responsibility and play a bigger role in projects from start to finish.

At Newcastle, that means:
• Leading portions of projects and coordinating with team members
• Working directly with clients, consultants, and contractors
• Expanding your experience across design, field reviews, surveying, and construction support
• Building the technical and leadership skills needed to grow into a Project Manager role

You won’t be stuck doing one thing all day. We believe well-rounded engineers make stronger project leaders, so our team gets exposure to every stage of the work.

We’re looking for someone who takes pride in doing things properly, enjoys working with others, and is ready to keep growing in their career.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Every site comes with constraints. The goal is to work through them without compromising the outcome.

For the Malone Road Subdivision Phases 1 & 2 in Ladysmith, the site presented a mix of environmental and technical challenges. Sensitive riparian areas, a creek crossing, an existing park, and steep terrain all needed to be considered.

Newcastle provided civil engineering services across transportation, stormwater, sanitary, and water systems, supporting both the initial 13-lot Phase 1 and future Phase 2 development.

Key elements of the project included:

• Designing storm outfalls that met provincial requirements and reduced erosion
• Routing services through an existing park while preserving mature trees
• Developing a culvert design sized for the full tributary area
• Extending infrastructure to support future phases without retrofit work

The result is a subdivision that supports long-term growth while working within the constraints of the site.

What's better than pancakes and our community? 🥞
We hope to see everyone on Saturday, May 16th, 2026 at Maffeo Sutton Park for a free community pancake breakfast! 🌞

🥞 You’re invited, Nanaimo 💛
Join us for One Table, One Nanaimo — a free community pancake breakfast where everyone is welcome to sit, eat, and connect.

On May 16th, from 8:30AM - 11:30AM, we’re gathering in one of Nanaimo’s most beautiful public spaces to share something simple but meaningful: a meal together.

Come by, grab a plate of pancakes, enjoy a coffee, and spend some time connecting with your community. Whether you come with friends, family, or on your own — there will be a seat for you at the table.

👉 And speaking of seats…
We currently have a maximum occupancy of 330 attendees (city permit rules — we like to keep things official 😄).
So come early, grab a seat, and help us make this a success so we can turn this free pancake breakfast into an annual Nanaimo tradition.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our local partners and sponsors 🙏
