Starting your day shouldn’t mean starting completely from scratch! With the Smart Lathe, there’s no long manual startup routine and no need to prepare a CNC program before you can begin working. Power it on, choose how you want to work, and get started. The Smart Lathe also remembers the last settings you were using, so if you’re using automatic cycles and you're coming back to the same job, you don’t have to set everything up again. Turn it on, pick up where you left off, and get back to making parts.

One of the best upgraded that you can add to a conventional lathe is a Digital Readout System. It makes tool positioning much easier and eliminates the need to rely only on handwheel dials or indicators. You have plenty of choices! Different brands, displays, scales, and systems for almost any machine. Here's the catch ... a DRO needs precise installation and alignment. Hardware can cost thousands of dollars, and a proper setup can push the total to around $5000. Even after installation, exposed scales and cables remain vulnerable to chips, coolant, and damage. It's still an external system.

On the Smart Lathe, there's no separate DRO to install. Position feedback is already built into the machine through its encoder-based control system. It works like a DRO, but gives you more flexibility. Choose the coordinate system and customize what you see on the screen. Each tool can have its own calibrated coordinates, so the machine keeps the correct reference when you switch tools.

If you already know how to run a lathe, the Smart Lathe immediately feels familiar. You still see the same basic layout — headstock, spindle, and a familiar working area. The carriage and apron-style structure are right where a machinist expects them to be. The tailstock is still there, and the operator works from the same familiar position at the machine. Now, familiar doesn’t mean limited. The same machine can also run automated cycles for common turning operations ... and when the job calls for it, full CNC capability is there too!

CNC looks great when you need it. Fast, accurate, automatic. What if most of your work doesn’t need full CNC complexity? Now your operator has to remember homing, offsets, program pages, G-code, and a completely different control. If he only uses it once in a while, he may have to learn parts of it again. On a manual lathe, a simple long cut is easy. Engage the feed and let it run. But threading to a shoulder? Now you’re watching the position, stopping, reversing, and managing the half-nut. Need a different thread pitch or cutting speed? That can mean more adjustments, charts, and gear changes. Cutting a taper? You’re setting the angle and controlling the movement by hand. The hard part is often not the cut. It’s everything the operator has to do around it.

Now compare that with the Stanko Smart Lathe. Set thread pitch, RPM, and other values directly on the control—even adjust spindle speed during threading.
