Today I had the opportunity to hear Prime Minister Mark Carney 🇨🇦 speak and participate in a fireside chat with the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, alongside Bridgitte Anderson, the Board’s President & CEO.
The conversation focused on Canada’s economic future, energy, infrastructure, housing, trade, and nation-building.
At my table were Nick Nouri (Compunet), Rebecca Bligh (Vancouver City Councillor), Zoe Royer, MP, and Carola Thompson. It was a pleasure connecting with such a thoughtful group, and with many others throughout the morning. There was a strong sense of optimism, collaboration, and recognition that Canada is entering an important period of change and opportunity.
Key takeaways from Mr. Carney:
• Canada must move faster on major projects and infrastructure
• BC will play a critical role in energy, LNG, critical minerals, ports, and trade
• Housing affordability and supply must become a national priority
• Trade diversification beyond the U.S. is essential
• Indigenous partnerships are foundational to future development
• Canada can become one of the world’s most trusted economic partners
As a builder, it was encouraging to hear a renewed national focus on getting projects moving and addressing the challenges we’re facing locally. I especially appreciated the recognition that affordability starts with supply, and that we need to reduce barriers, duplication, and delays.
My son is entering the electrical trade, and it’s encouraging to hear about the growth ahead in energy, infrastructure, and skilled trades.
Thank you, Mr. Carney. It was an honour to meet you.
We still have work to do here in BC:
• Reduce unnecessary fees and bureaucracy
• Incentivize homebuilding and consumers
• Streamline approvals
• Get all levels of government aligned to move projects forward
Canada has an incredible opportunity ahead. Now is the time to build, and to “adjust to what people want.”
