Seaspan was honoured to accept two Blue Circle Awards from the Port of Vancouver in recognition of our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability across both Seaspan Marine and Seaspan Shipyards.

“Year after year, Seaspan continues to make real, significant progress on our environmental and energy management goals. These awards are a reflection of this momentum and of the hard work our Marine and Shipyards teams do to increase energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact and deliver real change for our company, our communities, and the environment.” said Onyi Chidolue, Industrial Energy Manager.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Seaspan Marine has won the award as part of active participation in the Port’s EcoAction Program, and the third year that Seaspan Shipyards has been recognized in the Energy Action Program category focused on energy management, conservation measures, efficiency, and emissions reductions.

Thank you to the Port of Vancouver and to our other industry partners who are committed to making a positive difference through everyday actions.

The team at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has successfully completed the installation of both Replenishment at Sea (RAS) kingposts on the second Joint Support Ship (JSS2) under construction for the Royal Canadian Navy, officially marking the complete structural consolidation of HMCS Preserver.

The two kingposts, weighing in at 30-tonnes each, were lifted into place by Seaspan's skilled North Vancouver workforce using the 300-tonne gantry crane, Hiyí Skwáyel (or 'Big Blue') at Vancouver Shipyards. The kingposts are key to the ship’s RAS capability and represent the final major block installation for JSS2, following the recent installation of other critical equipment like the ship's mast.

The Disney Magic recently docked at Victoria Shipyards for routine maintenance and scheduled dry-docking. Following a quick refresh, she set sail to join the Disney Wonder, both ships preparing to guide guests through the breathtaking wonders of the Alaskan wilderness.

Naturally, we had to snap a few magical drone shots in the golden hour light. Thanks for stopping by!

"A project like this is something you want to be a part of."

It has been one year since the first cut of steel on the heavy polar icebreaker being built at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards for the Canadian Coast Guard.

In the twelve months since, Seaspan’s skilled, Canadian workforce has made significant progress on the vessel, with over 49 blocks underway.

When complete, the polar icebreaker will be one of Canada’s most complex and capable heavy icebreakers, ready to withstand year-round Arctic temperatures of up to –50 C and break ice up to two and a half metres thick.

Listen to the team behind the polar progress taking place here in British Columbia and learn more about how Seaspan is building a ship that will help defend our Arctic sovereignty and the Canadian industry to support it.

It has been just over one year since sparks flew at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards following the first cut of steel on the heavy polar icebreaker being built for the Canadian Coast Guard.

In the twelve months since, Seaspan’s Canadian workforce has made significant progress on the built-in-Canada vessel, with block manufacturing and production advancing steadily and to schedule at Vancouver Shipyards in North Vancouver, and significant manufacturing work taking place at Victoria Shipyards and Seaspan’s Ark Road facility on Vancouver Island.

Today, with over 49 blocks now under construction in the shipyard, one of Canada’s most complex and capable heavy icebreakers is taking shape in North Vancouver, one weld at a time.

In recognition of International Day for Women in Maritime, we’re looking back on our Women in Marine day that we hosted last March as an opportunity to celebrate the women who contribute their expertise and dedication in the marine industry, both out on the water and on shore.

From tugboat tours to a panel at the Polygon Gallery, the day brought women together to explore career opportunities, make connections and hear from industry leaders.

Every day, women show up as ship engineers, deckhands, captains, and shipbuilders, playing a vital role in advancing innovation, safety, and culture across our industry.

Seaspan is proud to support initiatives like Women in Marine Day that help grow a more inclusive marine workforce, and we look forward to building on that momentum next year. Stay tuned for more details on our 2027 women in marine day event.

Yesterday, on National Day of Mourning, Seaspan employees attended ceremonies across our sites, offering a moment to pause and remember those who lost their lives or were injured in a workplace tragedy.

Last year in BC, 138 workers died from occupational injuries. With each worker tragedy there are loved ones, family members, friends and co-workers whose lives are also changed forever.

For Seaspan and other workplaces across Canada, day of mourning is an opportunity to reflect on the past and also to renew our commitment to safety, so everyone gets home safely after work.

Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Today and every day, Seaspan is proud of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship in the communities where we live and work.

Recently, our Senior Environmental Manager, Daryl Lawes, joined The Coho Society for their annual release of over 20,000 chum fry into MacKay Creek.

“I’m super proud that Seaspan supports restoration projects and youth workshops that highlight the importance of protecting salmon habitat,” said Daryl. “It was an honour to be part of this community event and to work alongside partners who really care about our communities and ecosystems.

Investing in long-term partnerships with local organizations, such as the Coho Society, who raise awareness about salmon habitat restoration across the North Shore, is just one of the ways we demonstrate our care for the environment.

For several years, Seaspan has proudly supported their community-led restoration activities and youth education workshops that highlight the importance of environmental protection to future generations.

Thank you to our community partners, local volunteers, and employees who are doing their part to help protect the future of our local environment.

The largest polar block is on the move.

The team at Vancouver Shipyards celebrated a significant milestone as the heaviest and largest block on the heavy polar icebreaker, weighing in at about 230 tonnes, moved from the block assembly shop and into the blast and paint shop.

With help from Big Blue, Seaspan’s 300 tonne gantry crane, the block will soon be lifted onto a support cradle where it will remain as vessel construction continues up until launch.

From there the block and launch cradle will be transported back into the assembly shop where work will continue on the gargantuan block, which will be too heavy for Big Blue to lift once additional assemblies and wing tanks are in place.

Stay tuned for more polar updates as the team continues to make excellent progress on this unique icebreaking vessel for the Canadian Coast Guard.

Press Release: Seaspan Marine streamlines business with sale of chip and hog fuel barge division to Hodder.

Today, Seaspan Marine announced an agreement with Hodder Tugboat CO. LTD. to sell its legacy chip and hog fuel barge division, and remaining forestry industry transportation assets, subject to closing conditions.

The transaction, which is described as a “turnkey,” is inclusive of the workforce, existing services and related assets, like coastal tugs, river tugs and barges, and associated maintenance facilities — customers who rely on this vital service remain unaffected.

Seaspan Marine has operated along the Pacific coast for more than a century providing a range of marine services for commercial and industrial clients. Seaspan's specialized fleet and crew expertise have made it a maritime leader. This transition marks a strategic alignment of Seaspan's operations, focusing on positioning resources around its core service offerings of ship assist and vessel es**rt to support ports, new terminals, and the increased number of vessels requiring specialized assistance.
