There's a chill in the air, which means it's time for a few chores that will have you ready for the real cold weather that's just around the corner.
Make sure the filter on your furnace is clean, battery on the thermostats are new, and all the registers are functioning properly, find the air return grill and free it up by moving the sofa or boxes away so your furnace could breathe easily.
If you have in floor heating system put all the thermostats at 20 or 21 so you could save on gas and electricity. Try to keep the thermostat in one temperature and do not raise or lower the temperature more often as you put more pressure on the system.
As always we will be happy to help to make sure you’re all set . Just give us a call and our dedicated team is ready to assist.

Heating doesn't get warm? Then a hydraulic adjustment could help

A hydraulic adjustment ensures that the heating works effectively and energy-saving again. The good thing about it: You save a lot of heating costs.
Some of your radiators only get lukewarm? This could be due to a poorly adjusted heating system. Radiators that are further away are then no longer so well supplied with hot water. To remedy this, you can first try to vent the radiators. If it doesn't get better afterwards, a hydraulic adjustment can help to fix the problem. This even helps to save heating costs.

Heating: What is a hydraulic adjustment?
A hydraulic adjustment ensures that the right amount of water flows through all radiators. The water always seeks the way of least resistance, which means that the water prefers to flow through short and thick heating ears rather than through long and thin. This makes it harder for more distant rooms to supply water, while too high water pressure in nearby rooms causes poorly working thermostatic valves. Due to the hydraulic adjustment, the heating works more effectively again. Heat pump heaters therefore require less electricity, for heaters with condensing boilers, the consumption of oil or Gas. In some cases, however, consumption can also increase, because all radiators are now supplied with heat again.

Who will carry it out?
However, a hydraulic adjustment is not for laymen, it must be carried out by a specialist - for example by the heating technician or energy consultant. Tenants should inform their landlords if the radiators do not function properly.

How much does a hydraulic adjustment cost?
Depending on the effort and provider, the cost of hydraulic adjustment can vary greatly. The consumer center expects a single-family house with 10 radiators for the basic determination and adjustment of the valves, the pump and the heating curve alone. 400 euros. With additional costs for a more complex process and pre-adjustable valves, costs of a total of around 1,100 euros and more can arise. Get a cost estimate beforehand. The good news: The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) promotes hydraulic balancing with 15 to 20 percent of the eligible

How much do I save with it?
In the long term, a hydraulic comparison in heating cost accounting can be quite noticeable. The consumer center expects savings of up to 100 euros per year - even more for heat pumps. However, this depends heavily on the individual case and is difficult to quantify as a flat rate. If you want to save heating costs, you can also help yourself with simple tricks, such as setting the right room temperature or removing furniture from radiators.

REPLACING THE BATTERIES IN A THERMOSTAT IS A QUICK AND EASY DIY TASK

If the digital display of your thermostat has gone blank, or it’s telling you to replace the batteries, use this guide to make easy work of a simple task.

Many thermostats still use batteries, while others draw power from your home’s electrical or HVAC system. The typical battery-powered dial, switch, digital or programmable thermostat is going to take regular AA or AAA alkaline batteries, a button-style 3V lithium battery or a 9-volt battery. If you don’t know which kind of batteries your thermostat requires, you’ll soon find out.
It’s a good idea to change the thermostat battery each year on a scheduled date. The first day of fall season is a good choice. You might also want to change the batteries of your carbon monoxide (CO) detectors too. Before starting, gather a few simple tools, such as a short one-foot level and a screwdriver set.
• First, turn off the thermostat.
• Gently slide the thermostat housing up and off the wall mount plate. If it doesn’t slide up/off or up/back-tilt, you can probably just pull it off.
• Look at the back of the thermostat to see what kind of battery is required. You may need a screwdriver to carefully pry the battery out or to remove the cover.
• Note the direction of the plus and negative signs for AA and AAA batteries, and insert the new batteries in the appropriate slot.
• Gently wiggle the mount plate to see if it’s still firmly mounted to the wall. If it’s loose, tighten it as needed with a screwdriver.
• If you have an old thermostat that uses mercury, handle it very carefully. Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin and should be handled or disposed of safely. In fact, you might consider upgrading to an energy-saving programmable thermostat.

Air Balancing:
Ways to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots

Air balancing will improve air mcirculation, increase energy efficiency and enhance the overall performance of your air conditioning and heating system. For a homeowner, it means delivering the right amount of air (hot or cold) to each room making your home more comfortable.
Air balancing for our technician at Techno Mechanical is the process of testing and adjusting your system using their skill and tools of the trade. They look at your intake and output and adjust accordingly.
balancing is the single-most important step that can be taken to assure your systems produce comfort and operate efficiently."
In this article, We will share ways you can do-it-yourself to adjust (balance) your airflow for comfort. A comfort balance is as simple as checking whether a room feels comfortably conditioned. Then, We share ways that may require our HVAC professionals and We will help you understand how our technician at Techno Mechanical will go about actually balancing a residential system. This may require installing dampers or moving registers.

What is Air Balancing?
Air balancing is the process that involves modifying your existing HVAC system to make sure that air is evenly distributed throughout the home. All zones will have the correct amount of heat transfer. You want all components of your HVAC system working in harmony.
15 Tips on Balancing the Temperatures in Your Home
It's time to avoid those pesky hot and cold spots and uneven temperatures. I broke it down into easy, do-it-yourself tips, to harder may need some skill, to it's time to contact a professional.
-Close or Open Your Register
-Try a 2 Degree Offset
-Check Filters for Cleanliness
-Install Window Coverings to Prevent Heat
-Avoid Placing Electronic Equipment Near Thermostat
-Check for Drafts
-Adjust Ceiling Fans
-Prevent Airflow Restrictions
-Fix Your Duct Work
-Check Your Insulation
-Check and Adjust the System's Blower Fan Speed
-Install Extra Return Ducts if Necessary
-Use Two Air Handlers
-Know the Size of Your HVAC

Do it yourself...
-Close or Open Your Register
Simple yet effective. You have the ability to move the damper blade. It will restrict air flow in the room. But, don't completely close the vents, it could cause other issues to your HVAC system.
During warm weather temperatures, open registers on your upper floor and partially close registers on first floor and / or your basement. During cold temperatures, reverse the process.
Sierra Air Conditioning put together a handy guide to get your system properly balanced for each season. Try this process first:
Step 1: Set your thermostat to 76-78 degrees. (ideal range to start testing)
Step 2: Leave the temperature alone for at least 24 hours.
Step 3: In areas that are too cool, adjust the vents to allow for less air flow.
Step 4: Adjust in small increments to feel what works for your comfort.
Step 5: Re-check your adjustments (24 hours later) to feel if you reached the desired temperature.
Step 6: Continue until you reach your ideal temperature.
-Try a 2 Degree Offset
If you're in a two-story home and have two thermostats, set the temperatures to have a 2 degree off-set.
Here's what I mean...
Set the thermostat at a 2 degree difference for the floors. For example, upstairs could be set at 74 degrees and downstairs at 72. This will help with uneven temperatures.
-Check Filters for Cleanliness
There are numerous reasons to keep your filters clean...
• Improves your air quality - cleaning the debris that builds up on your filters will aid with the flow of air.
• Increases the efficiency of your furnace - reduced air flow through your heating and cooling system can cause your heat exchange to overheat and shut off too quickly. Keep the filter clean and it will aid in the efficiency of your furnace.
• Extend the life of your HVAC system - would you believe the most common reason a HVAC breaks down is due to a dirty filter? A dirty filter makes your system work harder causing it to overheat.
• Help keep energy costs down - Heating your home uses more energy and costs more money than any other system in your home -- typically making up about 42% of your utility bill. If your filter is not clogged your system will run more efficient. This alone will help keep your energy costs down. When you regularly change your filter, you can save from 5 to 15% on your bills.
-Install Window Coverings to Prevent Heat
Your windows will impact the comfort level in each room. Windows without drapes, blinds, shades etc. can heat up a room faster before a thermostat has the time to turn on and add relief.
Window coverings can make a difference in the overall appeal and comfort level. They also can help improve energy efficiency. In cooling seasons, about 76% of sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows enters to become heat.
-Avoid Placing Electronic Equipment Near Thermostat
Electronic equipment creates a lot of heat and can really affect your comfort. Nowadays with the addition of large screen TV’s and computers, the distribution of heat in the room can change and may require adjustments to your vents.
This is typically noticed if you have a room air conditioner. The thermostat can pick up heat from appliances which can also cause your A/C to operate longer.
-Check for Drafts
You want to make sure your windows and doors are sealed properly as these often cause cold spots in your home.
-Adjust Ceiling Fans
Changing the directional settings of a fan can have a profound effect on air circulation. Your ceiling fans should go counterclockwise during warming months to create cool downward airflow. However, it should go at a low speed in a clockwise motion during the cooler months so it can help evenly distribute warm air.
-Prevent Airflow Restrictions
Do not cover registers with furniture or items that will restrict air flow. When you block a vent with furniture your system has to work harder. Vents are there to supply free flow of air.
Here's a quick fix from Integrity Air:
"Your vents need 18 inches of space. Rearrange your furniture and hem your curtains so you can provide them with the air flow they need. If you have no other choice, get a magnetic air deflector so that the air blows away from the nearby furniture."
Deflectors can redirect the air flow keeping the intended air circulation.

Making sure your vents are working properly and preventing leaks in ducts will help save money and energy.

-Fix Your Duct Work
Fix any duct work damage and or defects. Problems with the duct work can cause uneven distribution.
If the duct air flow system is out of balance you will find that when heating, some rooms are not warm enough while others are too cool. While in air conditioning mode, you'll find similarly that some rooms are not cool enough while others are too warm.
Depending on your skill you could:
• fix loose duct joints by refitting and sealing the junction.
• look for ductwork with sharp turns
• insulate or seal the ducts
Always best to contact a HVAC professional.

-Check Your Insulation
If you think your home isn’t properly insulated, or you think you may not have insulation, hire a professional to do an evaluation. They will help find any problems with your insulation.

Top tips to heat your home for less in winter .
Don’t let the winter blues get you down this year. Keep your spirits high, your bills low and your home warm this season with these toasty tips.

It’s finally happened: summer is over. The temperature has dropped to the point where we can’t hold onto the dream any longer: winter is coming. We often talk about how expensive it is to run an air conditioner in the summer, but you might be surprised to know that about 61% of the energy used in the average Canadian home goes to heating. Luckily, there are ways to save money by keeping the heat where it belongs: in your home!

Eliminate drafts and plug holes
Check for extra space around your windows and doors that could be letting in cold air. If you’re not sure, try placing your hand a few centimeters away from the edges and see if you can feel a draft. If so, apply weather-stripping or sealant to fill any cracks.

Replace your windows

Does it feel like your windows are wide open, even when they’re closed? Is there any mold on your window frame? This problem probably needs more than just sealant; it’s likely time to replace your windows. Replacing all of your windows with ENERGY STAR® certified models could save you up to 45% (!) on your energy bill.

Change or clean your furnace filter
If you can't remember the last time you did that, you're probably overdue for a fresh filter. A clean filter improves air-flow and helps ensure warm air can actually make it out of the vents and into your home. Your owner's manual will tell you how often to change the filter for your specific model, but if it has been more than three months, it's time to do it.

Add more insulation
Too little insulation, especially in your attic or basement, can really affect the warmth of your home, letting hot air escape outside or making it feel colder near the walls. Adding insulation to key places, or even upgrading the insulation in your whole home, can make a big difference.

Adjust your thermostat

Lowering the temperature of your home two to three degrees Celsius is optimal for saving energy and keeping your home comfortable. A good guide is to program 17°C when you are sleeping or not at home, and 20°C when you are awake and at home. Keep it simple and install an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat so you can set it and forget it.

Use your ceiling fan more effectively
Change the rotational direction of your ceiling fan so it spins clockwise. This will pull up more cold air, forcing it to mix with hot air near the ceiling. The resulting warm air will get pushed down and make the room feel warmer. If you don’t have one, or need a replacement, make sure to purchase an ENERGY STAR certified model to increase your energy savings.

Move your furniture
Is your couch blocking a baseboard heater? Is your area rug covering a heat register or air duct? Take a look around your home to make sure all heat sources have space around them to let air flow freely, this will also allow your furnace to work more efficiently.

Make your curtains work for you
Window coverings can reduce energy loss through your windows, lower heating and cooling bills and improve your home’s comfort. Remember to open your curtains or blinds in the morning to let in natural heat and sunlight. Be sure to close them in the evening to keep heat from escaping back out through the windows.
