Tomorrow, September 26, communities across our city will be celebrating Ottawa 200.

Long before Ottawa became the industrious and vibrant city that we recognize today, the Ottawa River was the driving force behind our region's economy. What began as a vital highway for the region’s timber and logging trade soon grew into the heart of our modern energy infrastructure.

In fact, right at the centre of that history sits our generating station on Victoria Island. Built in 1891, it holds the distinction of being Canada’s oldest continuously operating hydroelectric station.

We’re proud to have powered this community through generations of innovation, growth and connection.

“One person’s trash is another’s treasure,” and at Portage Power’s Trail Road facility, that treasure is clean energy!

Deep inside the City of Ottawa’s landfill site along Trail Road in Richmond, decomposing waste produces methane – a greenhouse gas that’s 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Since 2007, we’ve captured this harmful gas – preventing it from reaching the atmosphere – and converted it into renewable electricity.

The impact?
🏡Enough clean energy to power 6,000 homes a year.
🚙The carbon equivalent of taking 330,000 cars off the road annually.

Ever wonder who’s managing the water levels on the Ottawa River?

You might be surprised to learn no single group handles it alone. Water levels are coordinated by the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board - a joint effort between dam owners and agencies in Ontario and Quebec, including Hydro-Quebec, Ontario Power Generation, the federal government, and yours truly, Portage Power.

Together, the board balances these critical needs along the river:
•Flood management
•Hydroelectric generation across 30+ stations
•Navigation, recreation and community safety
•Environmental and aquatic habitat protection

🌊🌊🌊

Fun Fact: Did you know Chaudière Falls owes its name to its original indigenous roots? The cauldron-like shape of the original falls, combined with the spray rising from the churning water, inspired the Algonquin First Nation to name the site “Akikok” (which translates to “boiler” or “cauldron”). When French explorer, Samuel de Champlain arrived, he translated the concept directly into French: Chaudière.

Today, Portage Power is proud to generate clean, renewable energy right here at this historical landmark.

-
