Congratulations to Shea Kennedy, recipient of the 2026 Sielo Engineering Student of the Year Award, which includes a $3,000 grant! 🎉

Shea is a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Ottawa uOttawa Génie | uOttawa Engineering Université d’Ottawa - University of Ottawa. Throughout his time at Sielo Robotics, Shea made exceptional contributions to the mechanical engineering of ARLO. His work included developing critical mounting and motor-coupling components, redesigning our beta gripper, creating adjustable vision-system mounts, improving cable strain relief and pinch-point protection, and completing a major redesign of our compliant gripper. Several of his designs will directly support the ARLO systems being deployed with wheelchair users.

What impressed us just as much as Shea’s technical ability was his initiative and commitment to inclusive engineering. In his own time, he worked directly with members of the disability community to understand their goals and co-create practical assistive solutions.

You may have seen the custom hockey-stick attachment he developed with Hollis Peirce, which enabled Hollis to use ARLO to play power hockey. Shea designed, manufactured, tested and refined the attachment to ensure it was strong, functional and suited to Hollis’s needs.

Shea consistently demonstrated creativity, technical skill, compassion and a genuine desire to use engineering to improve people’s lives. We are incredibly proud to recognize his contributions and cannot wait to see what he accomplishes next.

Congratulations, Shea! You have set a very high standard for future recipients! 🤖🏆
