We’ve run into situations where access to drawings or maps was restricted before a locate, with the idea that using them would be “cheating.”

It’s not.

Those records are where the process starts.

We use drawings, maps, and GIS data to identify known utilities and build an initial picture of the site. Those knowns are marked first.

Then the real work begins.

Full sweeps are performed to detect anything else — utilities that may not be documented, may have been installed later, or simply don’t appear on any records.

Records don’t replace locating. And locating doesn’t replace records.

You need both to get the full picture.

Removing that information doesn’t make a locate more accurate, it just removes context.

You wouldn’t take a carpenter’s hammer away and expect better results.

The same applies here.

Signals are interpretations — not exact positions.

The image above is a good example of how that plays out.

A locate sweep may detect multiple signals and mark their approximate positions. But when those utilities are physically exposed, their actual placement can be slightly different — sometimes closer together than what the signals suggested.

That’s because we are not detecting the pipe itself. We are interpreting a signal associated with it.

Signal behavior can be influenced by nearby utilities, soil conditions, depth, and congestion.

Because of that, locate markings represent an approximate position — not a direct confirmation of the utility.

That’s why we recommend daylighting any facilities near excavation.

Paint shows where to be cautious. Exposure confirms what’s actually there.

Ever wonder what all those colored markings on the ground actually mean?

They’re not random — each color represents a different type of underground utility:

Red — Electric power lines
Yellow — Gas, oil, and petroleum
Orange — Communication lines
Blue — Potable water
Green — Sewers and drainage
Purple — Reclaimed water / irrigation
Pink — Temporary survey markings
White — Proposed excavation

Understanding these markings is the first step in preventing damage and staying safe on any job site.

Before any digging starts, make sure you know what’s below.

Absolute Locating is built around one core service: accurate, dependable underground line locating.

While we also offer advanced support services like UAV inspections and methane detection, line locating is the foundation of what we do. It’s where safety starts, where projects stay on track, and where costly damage can often be prevented before it happens.

Whether the job involves construction, excavation, crossings, or site planning, having the right information before ground is broken matters.

When you need to know what’s below, start with Absolute Locating.

🎉 Exciting News from Absolute Locating! 🎉

We’re proud to share that three of our UAV pilots — Jeremy Hook, Caine Emms, and Kenome Imoniovu — have successfully completed their Transport Canada Level 1 Complex Operations (RPAS) certification!

This new certification, part of Transport Canada’s updated BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) framework, demonstrates our team’s ability to safely and efficiently operate drones over greater distances and in more complex environments. These advanced capabilities will help us deliver even higher-quality inspection, mapping, and methane-detection services for our clients.

We’re proud to be among the first pilots in Canada to earn this certification. While the new BVLOS regulations officially take effect on November 4, 2025, we’re already fully trained and ready to integrate these standards into our operations — ensuring a smooth transition once permissions become active.

A huge thank-you to Prairie Drone Academy for providing the exceptional ground school and training that helped us reach this milestone! 👏

🐝 Wasp Awareness Reminder 🐝

This time of year, wasps are especially active and can be aggressive as they search for food and prepare their nests for winter. For crews working outdoors, especially in rural and industrial areas, this can create unexpected hazards.

🔎 Tips for staying safe around wasps:

Stay alert around equipment, brush, or areas with debris where nests may be hidden.

Avoid leaving food or sweet drinks uncovered — these attract wasps quickly.

Wear light-colored clothing when possible; darker colors can attract them.

If you spot a nest near your work area, keep your distance and report it so it can be dealt with safely.

👉 For those working in the field, situational awareness goes a long way in avoiding painful stings — and potential allergic reactions.

At Absolute Locating, safety on site is always a priority — from underground hazards to unexpected ones above ground. Let’s stay aware and keep each other safe this season.
