Today’s Update — August 31

We have to give a HUGE shout-out to the Ron Cares Society for an absolutely incredible donation to support our total-loss families, made possible in partnership with SPARC BC and Soap for Hope Canada.

They put together 27 complete, three-part family care kits containing bedding, hygiene, wellness and food-security products — plus a $100 food gift card for every family.

That’s more than $12,150 in care kits, plus another $2,700 in food gift cards.

And this wasn’t simply shipped our way.

Fraser drove all the way from the Lower Mainland to the Okanagan to be here for 7:00 AM this morning and personally deliver these kits.

That is an extraordinary show of support for our total-loss families, and we cannot thank everyone involved enough.

Total-Loss Free Store

2130 Government Street, Penticton
Monday to Saturday — 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

I’m away right now, so I don’t have an updated needs list today, but the store is still open and running while I’m gone.

Ron Cares Society - Community Care Kit Program, SPARC BC, Soap For Hope Canada, Fraser, and everyone who helped make this happen — thank you.

Twenty-seven families are going to feel a little more supported because of what you did.

We’ll keep the momentum moving. ❤️

August 29th UPDATE:

We have officially discovered the side effect of Kelly and I, Blake, Chloe, two dogs and a cat all sleeping on air mattresses in one room…

Eventually, somebody has to leave. 😂

So before this turns into a full-blown reality show, we’re taking the kids away for a few days to have some fun and sleep in actual beds.

Mom and Dad are taking over the Free Store while we’re gone, and we’ll be back Wednesday!

Updates may be delayed or missing for a few days, but while I’m gone, keep the momentum moving.

And a BIG thank you to Al Mullins from Leisureland RV for dropping off some amazing items for our families! Support like this continues to make a huge difference.

CURRENT NEEDS:
* New dish cloths
* New tea towels
* Towel sets
* Queen, double & twin sheets
* Cleaning supplies & cloths
* All-purpose cleaner
* Dish soap
* Bounce dryer sheets

Free Store — 2130 Government Street

UPDATE-August 28: Where’s Joel’s YETI Collection?

Well… we finally got to go back in person.

A big thank you to the RDOS and our firefighters for making a short visit possible. Getting back onto the property, even briefly, was something we had been waiting for.

And wow…

My boat melted.
My composite deck turned to ash.
Even my concrete foundation decided it had enough and failed rather dramatically.

But apparently YETI cups are built different.

Kelly and I have been collecting YETIs for about 9 years, and somehow, after a wildfire, an entire roof collapsing on them, and basically everything around them being destroyed… some of these things are still recognizable.

They definitely don’t look as good as they used to, but somehow they’re barely even deformed.

The coolers, on the other hand…

Gone. Completely disappeared.

So today’s little game of wildfire Where’s Waldo?:

WHERE’S JOEL’S YETI COLLECTION?

How many YETI cups can you spot in the pictures?

Humour has been a pretty big part of my healing through all of this. My brother Kyle Patan is a professional comedian in Toronto, so apparently sarcasm and questionable timing run in the family.

Now, back to business.

TOTAL LOSS FREE STORE — CURRENT NEEDS

Every donation, every share and every item brought into the Free Store continues to make a difference.

Keep the momentum going.

🚨EDMONTON SHOWED UP FOR US! 🚨

Dennis and Don made the drive nearly 1,000 kilometres from Edmonton to our Total Loss Free Store in Penticton BC, bringing an unbelievable amount of donations with them.

And I mean unbelievable. They filled the whole room!

I have never seen one truck so full.

Somehow they packed it all into one GMC 1500. Good thing it had the payload for it.

But what really stuck with me was not the truck.

It was the fact that people nearly 1,000 kilometres away heard what our families were going through and decided to help.

Northgate Chevrolet Buick GMC became a drop-off location, helped collect donations from across the Edmonton area, contributed directly, and gave people there a way to support families here.

Dennis and Don, thank you for taking the time to make that drive and personally bring everything down to us.

And thank you to Mike, Pam, and the entire northgategm team for continuing to stand beside our families.

Most of all, thank you to everyone in Edmonton who donated, dropped something off, shared our story, or helped make this happen.

The amount of compassion being shown to our total loss families continues to be hard to put into words.

Edmonton showed up for us.

Nearly 1,000 kilometres away, and you still found a way to be beside our community.

That is how recovery keeps moving.

One person helps another.
One community stands beside another.
And little by little, momentum keeps building.

Keep the momentum moving.

And Don — sorry about the photo. Apparently we’re better HVAC installers than photographers.

AUGUST 26 UPDATE — PHASE 2 & KEEPING THE MOMENTUM GOING

I missed yesterday’s update, but there is lots to share.

First, a huge thank you to Larry and the team at Penticton Toyota for hosting yesterday’s Town Hall. The turnout was incredible, and there was a lot of useful information shared.

Some of it was difficult to hear and there are going to be some tough realities and conversations ahead of us. But I know our community.

We are tough, independent, and used to figuring things out ourselves. We will take the information, ask the hard questions, advocate for what our communities need, and keep moving forward together.

FREE STORE — PHASE 2
The Free Store remains OPEN, but we have now moved into Phase 2 and our donation needs are becoming much more specific.

Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
Location: 2130 Government Street, Penticton

At this time, we are NOT accepting:

* Clothing
* Books

We are accepting limited small household items and are currently looking for:

* School supplies
* Cleaning supplies
* Toilet paper
* Dish cloths
* Hand sanitizer
* RV sewer/holding tank treatment
* Grey tank odour treatment
* RV water filters
* RV water treatment products
* Garbage Bags

A number of our displaced families are now living in RVs and temporary accommodations, so these everyday RV supplies are becoming increasingly important.

THE MISSING GAP:
We continue to raise funds to help fill the gaps that insurance, ESS and other programs simply don’t cover.

Our community GoFundMe:
https://gofund.me/b64ebc712

Every donation, share, conversation and connection helps.

There is still a very long road ahead, but this community has already shown what happens when people come together.

And if you look at the bottom right of the photo — that’s my boat, or what’s left of it. The force of nature is incredible.

We will rise above this. We will advocate for what we need. And we will keep the momentum going.

AUGUST 24 UPDATE — SUPPORT LOCAL + PHASE 2

Today I want to highlight another side of this disaster: our local businesses.

This photo shows part of my own business loss — damaged materials, equipment and still some major unknowns inside our sea cans. We are far from the only business affected.

Businesses from Summerland to Okanagan Falls, including Penticton, Naramata and Kaleden, have faced evacuations, lost work, reduced traffic and uncertainty.

If each of us spends $50 at three different local businesses, that’s $150+ per person going right back into our local economy.

We’re working with the Penticton Chamber of Commerce on an idea where Patan Heating and Air would offer 15% off, up to $150, when customers support three participating local businesses. Details are still being worked out, but the goal is simple: create a snowball effect of local supporting local.

PHASE 2 — FREE STORE

We are now transitioning into Phase 2. The Free Store is still here, but as residents move into different accommodations, their needs are changing.

Current needs:

* Toilet paper
* Paper towel
* Cleaning supplies
* School supplies
* Everyday household essentials

For larger-item donations, please contact us. We are creating a list so we can connect those items directly with families based on need.

We’re also incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Summerland Health Auxiliary, helping us extend support to our total-loss families.

* Monday, August 24th to Saturday, August 29th
* 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
* Open specifically for total-loss families
* Up to $70 in items before any charge applies

ANOTHER PILLAR OF OUR COMMUNITY STEPPING UP ❤️

The Summerland Health Auxiliary Thrift Store has been a pillar of this community for years — and once again, they are stepping up in a big way for families who have lost everything.

For our total-loss families:

* Monday, August 24th to Saturday, August 29th
* 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
* Open specifically for total-loss families
* Up to $70 in items before any charge applies

We have also moved a large amount of donations from our Free Store over to the Thrift Store, helping make sure those items continue getting directly into the hands of the families who need them.

A very personal thank you

I also want to thank my mom, Julie Patan, and my dad, Doug Patan — Councillor Patan.

They gave me the opportunity to step away this weekend and spend some much-needed time with my family, while they worked behind the scenes to help bring this partnership together.

They also helped provide additional donations to support it, making sure this partnership had even more to offer our total-loss families.

That support means more to me than I can say.

This is what community recovery looks like.

One organization helping another.
People sharing the load.
Resources being moved to where they can do the most good.
And our families continuing to be supported as they take the next steps forward.

Please share this with anyone who may not be on Facebook so no total-loss family misses out on this support.

A huge thank you to the Summerland Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Store, its volunteers, my parents, and everyone continuing to step up for our community.

Keep the momentum going. ❤️

🏆 Best of Patan 2026 – Ryland Lebedoff

Next up is Ryland Lebedoff, our 2nd Year HVAC Apprentice.

Ryland was actually the inspiration behind our Rising Tech Program. He started with us with absolutely no experience—he just wanted an opportunity and was willing to get moving.

Since then, the growth has been unreal.

Ryland has shown a tremendous aptitude for HVAC. He’s an incredibly smart young man, and if you needed a definition for reliable, his name would be somewhere near the top of the list.

One of the things that stands out most about Ryland is something that simply can’t be taught—his kindness and the level of respect he shows to everyone around him. Clients, coworkers, suppliers—it doesn’t matter. He carries himself extremely well.

And one thing about Ryland—he doesn’t know the word quit either. Just pure determination.

Because of that mindset, he has already far surpassed the knowledge level you would normally expect from a second-year apprentice.

Ryland is a rare breed of apprentice, and someone we are incredibly proud to have on our team.

Ryland also speaks fluent hockey slang, so translated properly…the boy has been showing absolute dangles through his apprenticeship and deserves a celly for being part of the Best of Patan 2026 🏒🔥
