We’ve all heard of the Devil’s Brigade, but how many of us know the Frogmen of Burma?

Officially known as the Sea Reconnaissance Unit, these waterborne commandos were an elite group of military divers during the Second World War. In early 1945, they spearheaded the British Army’s attacks across the rivers of Burma in Southeast Asia.

George Henry Avery was one of the Canadians serving with the unit. On February 25, 1945, he made history as the first frogman to earn the Military Cross for his courage in combat.
