We had a blast at our fifth road ecology workshop yesterday! 🐢🛣️🐍

It was great to be back in continuing important conversations about how we can make roads safer for wildlife.

During the workshop, we explored the importance of road ecology, shared lessons from past projects, and visited existing infrastructure in the field. We saw how concrete headwalls can help guide wildlife toward safe crossings, while also identifying areas where fencing improvements and maintenance are still needed. We also brainstormed some creative solutions to address areas where road conditions are creating unsafe situations for nesting turtles.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversation. 💚 Each workshop is another step toward building more connected landscapes for wildlife in Guelph and beyond.

Guelph leads the way but needs more adaptive management and maintenance in its projects. Fencing is only effective if it includes access to nesting habitat otherwise turtles will go around fence ends and get killed. Stop using materials that dont work. Contact us we can help. We have partnered with the right experts and contractors and suppliers

Today we added a new erosion control measure to our Nest Mounds enclosed by vinyl sheet pile in Long Point Provincial Park. A big worm or commonly known as a silt sock was wrapped around the edge of the added substrate. Thank you to the Long Point Biosphere volunteers and University of Waterloo students m i t c h Demers and Marcus. Also LMP mini excavation and landscaping who constructed the Mounds at a special turtle 🐢 rate...... Update A map turtle used our newly built nesting mound!

We had a successful road ecology workshop for the Eastern Foxsnaķe. We welcomed speakers Scott Gillingwater and Ryan Wolfe and Darnell lambert from Norfolk County. Hosted by Long Point Biosphere Region and long point Long Point Basin Land Trust at Long Point Eco-Adventures & Marshview Patio . We learned that snakes move up and down riparian creeks and spread out to open canopy from there. Their distribution is widespread but there were noticeable Wildlife on Roads hot spots and we hope to integrate barriers and funnel fencing at new bridge projects on County Road 60 in the next year or two.

All of these hatchlings are from eggs found on the roadsides near marshes in the Long Point Biosphere Region. By collecting and incubating we assisted hatchling survival by reducing vehicle road mortality, predation, poaching and dehydration.

Less than 1% of turtle hatchlings will make it to adulthood. But you can change that. December 2 is , and we're asking you to help launch our Tiny Headstart Program, a new initiative that will provide turtle hatchlings with a year of care before releasing them into the wild. This makes them stronger and gives them a better chance at survival. this Giving Tuesday and give at-risk turtle hatchlings a tiny head start. Donate today. Every gift counts.
