Into the twenty-first century, fungal pathogens are on the rise. The World Health Organization published a list of 19 priority fungal pathogens to reflect this. This rise likely reflects climate change, and an increase of people at risk due to the advent of modern medical immunosuppressant therapies.

These infections have a high mortality and require lengthy healthcare stay and treatments. Treatments are long and becoming increasingly difficult with the rise of antifungal resistance that, in many ways, mirrors the history of the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Increased awareness of this issue is required to improve diagnosis/diagnostics technologies and to improve public health and one-health measures.
