D&R Custom Steel completed a 304L stainless steel fabrication project for equipment destined for Rogers, Arkansas.

Cutting a piece of stainless steel is only the beginning of its journey through a fabrication shop.

Depending on the project, that same piece may be formed, machined, drilled, fitted, welded, cleaned, inspected, assembled, tested, and eventually prepared for shipment.

What makes custom fabrication particularly interesting is that these processes aren't independent.
How a component is cut can affect forming.
Forming can influence fit up.
Fit up can influence welding and final dimensional accuracy.

That means production planning has to consider more than the operation happening today. It also has to consider what needs to happen to that component three, four, or five steps later.

Good fabrication is as much about understanding the entire process as it is about completing each individual step.

D&R Custom Steel fabricated a custom hopper for a project in Mission Viejo, California.

Hoppers are designed to receive, hold and direct materials within a larger process. While their function may seem straightforward, successful fabrication requires careful attention to geometry, material flow, connection points and dimensional accuracy so the finished equipment integrates properly with the surrounding system.

Fit-up, weld quality and fabrication sequencing are also important when producing large custom components, particularly when equipment needs to arrive on site ready to integrate with other process equipment.

This project is another example of D&R’s experience fabricating custom process equipment to meet the specific requirements of industrial and infrastructure applications.

Every great fabrication shop depends on more than powerful equipment, it depends on efficient workflow.

One of the exciting additions to D&R Custom Steel's new facility will be an automated plate storage and racking system integrated directly with our laser cutting table. The system will automatically retrieve the required material, load it onto the laser table, and unload finished parts once cutting is complete.

By automating these material handling tasks, our team can spend less time moving heavy plates and more time focused on the skilled work that adds value throughout the fabrication process. It also helps improve workflow, increases production efficiency, and keeps material organized and readily accessible.

Investments like these aren't just about adding new technology: they're about creating a smarter, more efficient manufacturing environment that supports both our employees and our customers.

A completed weld can tell an experienced welder or inspector a lot before any additional testing begins.

Visual inspection looks at characteristics such as weld profile, size, continuity, surface condition, and visible discontinuities. Knowing what to look for requires an understanding of both the welding process and the acceptance criteria that apply to the project.

That knowledge is developed through training, certification, and experience working with different materials, joint configurations, and welding processes.

At D&R Custom Steel, our CWB Weld Supervisors and Inspectors are part of the team helping ensure welding is completed in accordance with applicable procedures and project requirements.

It's another example of how much technical knowledge exists behind the work happening on the shop floor every day.

Some summer afternoons call for a slight change in the production schedule.

D&R recently brought an ice cream truck to the shop, giving the team a chance to step away from the work for a few minutes, cool off, and apparently take some very serious ice cream photos along the way.

It was a simple way to enjoy a summer afternoon together and have a little fun outside of the usual day to day.

Thanks to everyone for being good sports for the camera. The ice cream may be gone, but thankfully, the photos live on.
