Domtar’s Howe Sound Pulp & Paper (HSPP) Kraft mill will undergo its scheduled annual maintenance shutdown from May 18 to June 2, 2025. During this period, the mill’s wood waste boiler will also be offline for approximately 11 days to facilitate maintenance on the steam distribution system.
The shutdown will encompass internal inspections, as well as preventative and routine maintenance of the Fibreline, Power and Recovery process equipment and vessels.
During the shutdown, there will be no production of odorous emissions. However, there may be a presence of very low of odorous compounds caused by fugitive emissions from tanks and vessels. While HSPP does not anticipate local air quality to exceed provincial odour limits, we have implemented additional procedures to monitor and respond to continuous air quality measurements from the HSPP ambient monitoring station in Langdale.
Located on the western side of spectacular coastal British Columbia, Howe Sound Pulp and Paper is one of the oldest operating mills in the province. Completely rebuilt to modern standard in 1991. 90% of HSPP’s energy comes from renewable sources with 50% reduction in greenhouse gases since 1990. Generations of families who were first attracted to the area by mill jobs, stayed to have made the Sunshine Coast their home. Howe Sound Pulp and Paper facility is a leading producer of high quality Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulps. These pulps are used by customers worldwide to make a variety of products from tissue and paper towels to fine writing paper. The mill has an annual production capacity of 355,000 tonnes of pulp, employs 350 people and contributes $950 million to the economy.
