Bridges 101 – Ever wonder what supports a bridge between its two ends?

Meet the PIERS.

Piers are the intermediate supports that carry loads from the bridge superstructure down into the foundations below. They're essential for bridges that require multiple spans, providing stability and support where abutments alone aren't enough.

Depending on the design and site conditions, piers can be constructed from reinforced concrete, steel, timber, or a combination of materials.
From deep river crossings to rugged mountain terrain, bridge piers must be engineered to withstand more than just the weight of traffic. Water currents, debris, ice, and seismic forces can all influence their design.

🎥 Featured in this week's video are the piers of the Baxter Bridge, spanning the beautiful Shuswap River in British Columbia. This project holds a special place in Formula's history, earning us the 2025 BC Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association Contractor of the Year Award!

At Formula, we know that building a strong bridge starts with what supports it.

Ever wonder what actually holds up a bridge at each end? Meet the ABUTMENTS!

Abutments support the ends of the bridge, transfer loads from the superstructure into the foundation, and retain the soil behind the approaches. They also help create that critical transition between the roadway and the bridge itself.

Depending on the design, abutments can be built from reinforced concrete, steel, timber, MSE systems, or a combination of materials.

These photos are from our Redknife Culvert Replacement project completed for GNWT Infrastructure, where the abutments can be seen taking shape as part of the overall bridge structure.

At Formula, bridges are what we do — so over the next few weeks, we’re breaking down the components that make them work. Bridges 101 — built to help you understand what’s underneath the road you travel every day.

Ever wonder what actually carries the load of a bridge?

Meet the GIRDERS.

Girders are the primary longitudinal structural members that support the bridge deck and transfer loads through the structure to the piers and abutments below. Depending on the bridge design, they can be fabricated from steel, precast concrete, timber, or other engineered materials. From transportation and setting to alignment and final installation, girder er****on is a critical stage of bridge construction.

COMING NEXT WEEK — BRIDGES 101

Bridges are something most of us use every day, but how often do we think about what actually goes into building one?

Next week, Formula is launching Bridges 101 — a new social series breaking down the different components that make up a bridge and explaining what each one does.

From girders and abutments to piles, bearings, decks and more, we’ll take a closer look at the pieces that work together to create the structures that keep people, goods and communities moving.

Some are easy to see - others are buried underground or hidden beneath the deck. Every one of them matters.

Follow along as Formula takes you inside bridge construction with Bridges 101.

Big equipment. Skilled people.

Formula’s crane operators bring the experience and precision required to safely execute complex lifts on bridge, piling and heavy civil projects across Western Canada.

The equipment matters. The people behind it matter more.

🚧 NEW TO THE FORMULA FLEET

Formula has added a Bay-Lynx Titan Volumetric Concrete Mixer, allowing us to produce fresh concrete directly on site.

For our clients, that means:

🔸 Fresh concrete on demand
🔸 Less waste
🔸 Better control over quantities
🔸 Greater flexibility on remote sites
🔸 Fewer delays waiting on concrete supply

Another addition to the fleet that helps us keep projects moving.

WORKING OUTSIDE IN WILDFIRE SMOKE?

With air quality poor across much of BC, outdoor workers need to take a few extra precautions

• Check the air quality before starting work and throughout the day
• Take more breaks in cleaner-air areas when available
• Keep equipment and vehicle windows closed and use filtered air when possible
• Use appropriate respiratory protection when required and ensure it is properly fit-tested
• Watch your crew for coughing, headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath or unusual fatigue

Our crews work outside in some challenging conditions, but getting the job done should never come before getting everyone home safely.

Look out for yourself. Look out for your crew. Stay safe out there, BC.
