“Heavy Metal Rocks” is a 4 day heavy duty work experience and career awareness opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 students in School District No. 57 (Prince George). The Prince George Construction Association developed a partnership with the School District, the College of New Caledonia and WorkSafeBC in 2005 to pilot this project, created to highlight the need for young workers in the Construction

Industry and showcase the multifaceted careers associated with construction that are available to young people.

2014 marks the project’s 10th anniversary and “Heavy Metal Rocks” and we are very pleased to see how much momentum has been gained over this time, with the event becoming an ever greater success each year! Thirty-two students are selected by an application and interview process. Prior to the start of the event, each student is required to complete Construction Safety Training System (CSTS-09) in order to participate. On day 1 the students receive safety awareness training from WorkSafeBC, participate in a tour of a local Construction Industry plant and are introduced to the many career paths the construction industry has to offer. On Days 2, 3, and 4 students are given the opportunity to operate a variety of heavy equipment under the supervision of experienced operators. During the lunches and snack breaks that are provided for all participants, students are provided with a variety of related demonstrations. On the fourth day parents, politicians and local dignitaries are invited to an awards presentation and wrap-up BBQ. Construction contractors, utility companies and many other industries in the transportation and resource sectors require heavy equipment and operators in related job categories. These entities need young people who have a knowledgeable interest in operating heavy equipment or working in support services such as parts, mechanics, sales, welding and surveying. Evaluation forms are circulated to students, operators and parents and the responses are overwhelmingly positive.
