Plan ahead, and bundle up your building envelope for next winter!

Recently completed a crawlspace insulation retrofit for an apartment building in Regina that had been experiencing recurring frozen and bursting pipes caused by cold exterior air pe*******on into the crawlspace.

By sealing and insulating the foundation walls with spray foam insulation, the building now benefits from:

• Reduced heat loss and improved thermal performance
• Better protection of plumbing and infrastructure
• Lower heating costs and reduced energy consumption
• Reduced risk of costly freeze-ups, water damage, and insurance claims

Sometimes the most impactful energy efficiency upgrades are the practical ones.

This crawlspace retrofit is a relatively inexpensive solution that will pay itself back through energy savings and avoided maintenance and insurance costs alone.

If your building is experiencing cold floors, freezing pipes, drafts, or high heating costs, get in touch with us for a quote today.

Pleased to share the delivery of our second PIRANHA Wastewater Heat Recovery system in Saskatchewan, bringing Canadian-made clean tech to Regina for Arbutus Properties’s first multifamily development in the City at 1705 Neville Drive.

In this 210-unit project, the system helped improve performance from 18.7% to 25.4% over National Energy Code, supplying 20–25% of the building’s domestic hot water needs.

Unlike other heat pump systems, PIRANHA’s operation is not impacted by outdoor or ground temperatures. It captures and repurposes energy from within the building itself, using daily wastewater generation as a consistent and reliable energy source. The system typically operates in the COP range of 3.0–4.0 (300–400% efficiency), with higher wastewater temperatures enabling even greater efficiency.

Beyond the technical benefits, projects like this create opportunities for education, training, and broader awareness of energy solutions across Saskatchewan, while serving as real-world examples for students, trades, and industry.

Proud to partner with SHARC Energy Systems to bring scalable wastewater heat recovery solutions to the Province.

Capturing heat already flowing through our buildings to improving energy efficiency, and support the future of sustainable development in the Prairies.

This week, the PIRANHA T10 Wastewater Heat Recovery System, manufactured by SHARC Energy, has officially been moved into place at the City of Regina’s Rapid Housing Initiative, Orange Buffalo Lodge. https://lnkd.in/ezpFguvh

This system captures waste heat (energy) from a building’s wastewater discharge, and upgrades it to provide domestic hot water at an efficiency of approximately 340% (COP 3.4), resulting in a significant reduction in overall energy demand and long term operating costs.

With equipment now in place, piping and system connections will take place throughout May by with commissioning targeted for June, start up in July, and full building occupancy expected before the end of Summer 2026.

Projects like this demonstrate how we can rethink energy use in buildings by turning what was once wasted into a valuable resource.

This project is Orange Buffalo Lodge, a 30 unit multi family residential building located in Regina’s North Central neighbourhood. The development will provide safe, culturally respectful, and affordable housing, while incorporating community driven design and support services that contribute to long term neighbourhood well being.

The PIRANHA system played a key role in helping this development meet Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) energy efficiency requirements, achieving over 25 percent better than the National Energy Code for Buildings.

For this 30 unit project, the system is projected to:

- Provide over 90 percent of domestic hot water requirements

- Operate at a COP of 3.4 (340% efficiency)

- Contributed ~ 13% toward the total 30.3% percent improvement over NECB

It was a privilege to attend the George Gordon Developments Ltd. Partnership Forum once again this year. Mîyo-Wîcêhtowin.

This marks Sask Renewables & SHARC Energy’s third year in a row being invited to take part in this event, and every year it continues to grow in both scale and impact.

It is inspiring to see the vision that GGDL and their leadership group (Don Ross, Josh Montana, and team) are advancing across Saskatchewan, setting an example for Indigenous Economic Development organizations all throughout Canada.

We were able to exhibit and attend alongside our synergistic industry partners Preferred Energy, and P90 Energy.

The presentations from GGDL leadership, along with industry partners such as K+S Potash Canada and BHP, highlighted the significant opportunities ahead in energy, mining, infrastructure, and economic development.

Events like this are a great reminder of how important strong industry relationships are. It was great to reconnect with the partners of the GGDL network, while also making new connections with organizations looking to collaborate on future projects.

Thank you to George Gordon Developments for continuing to bring industry, community, and partners together in such a meaningful way.

Looking forward to the projects and partnerships that will grow from the new 5-year strategic plan that was unveiled.

SHARC Energy has announced the commercial launch of its new Back Flush Only (BFO) system, with the first deployment scheduled for a wastewater treatment plant in Calgary, AB: https://lnkd.in/eXKz556v

Unlike the larger SHARC (large volume filtration) system designed for raw wastewater, the BFO system is optimized for cleaner effluent streams and does not require solids separation or maceration. The system leverages passive thermal energy transfer to efficiently recover energy from a suitable source, and transfer it for heating needs, DHW, and other building or process applications.

The BFO system is engineered for applications including:
• Non-solids effluent streams
• Grey water
• Wastewater treatment plant discharge
• Data centers
• Hydronic HVAC systems
• District heating and cooling ambient temperature loops (ATLs)

Wastewater carries a massive and consistent amount of thermal energy that is typically discharged unused. Technologies like this continue to expand the opportunity to capture and reuse this energy for building heating, domestic hot water, and district energy systems.

At Saskatchewan Renewable Energy Solutions, we are excited to see continued innovation in wastewater heat recovery and the growing potential for these systems within municipal, commercial, and industrial infrastructure.

Get in touch with us to discuss potential applications and how this technology could be integrated into your project or facility.

Many industrial facilities across Sask & Canada are facing an increasingly common challenge that often goes unnoticed until it becomes operationally critical: elevated wastewater discharge temperatures.

Commonly in industrial applications, wastewater must be cooled by up to 10°C or more before it reaches the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Discharging effluent that exceeds allowable temperature thresholds can negatively impact downstream biological and treatment processes at the designated wastewater treatment plant, possibly disrupt operations, and create compliance risks for both the facility and the municipality. This may also result in financial penalties or surcharge fees depending on the jurisdiction.

https://lnkd.in/eW__dh6j

This is where SHARC Energy’s wastewater heat recovery systems present a unique opportunity. Rather than relying on conventional cooling methods, or no method at all, to remove heat from outgoing effluent only to reject it as waste, SHARC systems capture thermal energy directly from outgoing wastewater streams prior to discharge to the plant.

This recovered energy can then be repurposed within the facility for:

• Space Heating
• Hot water preheating & Washing
• Process Heating Loads
• Hydronic Heating
• Snow Melt or and other low temperature thermal demands

In doing so, facilities are able to actively reduce wastewater discharge temperatures while simultaneously boosting overall system efficiency by transferring recivered heat to offset natural gas or electric heating demand elsewhere in their operations.

This week, Sask Renewables had the opportunity to deliver a technical presentation to Pace Solutions Corp. on SHARC Energy’s Wastewater Heat Recovery systems.

PACE is a forward thinking organization that continues to explore innovative approaches to improving operational efficiency and long term sustainability across industrial, and agricultural processing environments.

As facilities across Saskatchewan evaluate pathways toward energy efficiency, wastewater cooling, and long term emissions reduction strategies, wastewater heat recovery presents a unique opportunity to capture thermal energy that would otherwise be lost to the sewer system; repurposing it for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water preheating, or process loads.

We appreciated the discussion today!

Great to see stepping in as General Contractor on Orange Buffalo Lodge in Regina to take it to the finish line. We’re looking forward to seeing this project completed for the neighbourhood & community.

When complete, this development will provide safe, affordable housing built for long-term resilience and energy performance in mind, supporting both residents and operators over the life of the property. It will be a meaningful addition to the neighbourhood, offering quality housing along with inclusive community spaces and programming designed to serve a wide range of residents in a comfortable, durable, and functional environment.

The project reflects the kind of development that aligns with the goals of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Société canadienne d’hypothèques et de logement(SCHL)’s Rapid Housing Initiative.

This is also one of our upcoming wastewater heat recovery project locations in Saskatchewan, featuring the implementation of a PIRANHA wastewater heat recovery system — a specialized water-to-water heat pump designed to recover thermal energy from wastewater and reuse it within the building.

By capturing thermal energy for re-use within the building’s heating systems, the technology is designed to improve overall energy efficiency and help lower utility costs over time.

In the Prairies, where heating demands are high and domestic hot water is always required, wastewater heat recovery is well suited to our climate. Because the core infrastructure of the system is located within the building and wastewater temperatures remain relatively stable during the year, system performance is largely unaffected by outdoor temperatures.
