Hangar Doors Made For High Frequency Helicopter Maintenance Operations
Spec-Dor® is proud to have contributed to a major U.S. Department of Defence aviation project at Wheeler Army Airfield in Oahu, Hawaii, with a custom, high-wind-rated steel door system whose true advantage lies in its unmatched versatility for high-frequency helicopter maintenance operations.
Commissioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this facility was constructed to house a state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance hangar capable of servicing up to six military helicopters simultaneously. Maintaining up to six helicopters simultaneously means aircraft roll in and out on their own schedules - for fuelling, repairs, or rapid-response missions. Traditional wide-span doors force crews to open every panel, exposing the entire hangar to wind, rain, salt spray, and dust each time a single aircraft moves.
Spec-Dor's solution:
- Independent Blade Control - Each door blade is motorized and can be opened, closed, or positioned individually from a pair of remote pendants on either side of the door.
- Selective Access - Ground crews open only the bay they need, letting one helicopter depart while the others stay protected.
- Reduced Air Exchange - Minimizes energy loss, maintains interior climate control, and cuts down on foreign-object debris (FOD) blowing into sensitive maintenance areas.
- Faster Turnarounds - No waiting for a full door cycle; aircraft can taxi in or out within seconds of clearance.
Built Tough - and Smart - for the Pacific Theater
Although versatility is the star, strength is still a must in hurricane-prone Hawaii. The door system:
- Meets DoD Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) and Hawaii Building Code (HBC) wind-load codes (greater than 145 mph).
- Uses high-strength, corrosion-resistant steel and sealed bearings for long life in salt-laden air.
- Integrates redundant safeties and manual overrides to ensure operation during power or control-system interruptions.
