Are We Measuring Sow Efficiency Correctly❓

Modern sows face ~40% higher lactation demands than in the past, yet feed intake hasn't kept pace. Traditional metrics only look at feed in vs. litter gain: They miss what's happening to the sow's body.

Dr. Carine Vier and Dr. Hyatt Frobose introduced a new framework at the GESTAL Swine Summit: 4 efficiency profiles based on production AND body reserve mobilization. The finding? Up to 80% of gilts fall into high-catabolism categories. High production doesn't always mean true efficiency.

🔑The key to success in GESTAL 3G pens is ensuring that the first visit to stations is a positive experience.
Most farms are feeding animals in stalls first thing in the morning, but if possible, it’s important to feed animals their allowance for the day prior to moving them into pens. This is important, because in general, satiated animals will fight less and this also allows for a less stressful transition to pens and the pen dynamic.
With this method, animals who do decide to enter stations and receive a meal on the first day in pens are “rewarded” for the behavior of entering the station.

🔍Are we measuring sow efficiency the right way?

Traditional lactation feed efficiency doesn't account for body composition changes, and that gap can lead to some misleading conclusions about which sows are truly performing.
Jyga Technologies partnered with PIC and Brenneman Pork to explore a new framework that paints a more complete picture of sow efficiency during lactation.
