What is the difference between single phase and three phase power?

Single-phase electricity uses two wires to deliver power in one pure sine wave of oscillating voltage. Think of it like a single-cylinder engine - it delivers power in pulses as the single piston rises and falls. This is what you have in your home for regular outlets, lights, and most household appliances. The power rises and falls in a wave pattern 60 times per second (60Hz).

Three-phase electricity uses three wires (plus sometimes a fourth neutral wire) to deliver power in three overlapping waves that are timed differently - 120° out of phase with each other. Imagine three single-cylinder engines working together, but each one fires at a different time - this creates much smoother, more consistent power delivery. It's like having three people pushing a heavy cart with alternating force instead of just one person pushing it alone.

The main advantages of three-phase is smoother power (less vibration in motors), more power capacity over smaller wires, and better efficiency for large power delivery.
