Our succulents are looking gorgeous in this sun and heat.

Unlike annuals that can be challenged by hot, sunny weather and require regular watering and dead-heading to flourish, succulents are drought tolerant, easy-care and are perfect for Saskatchewan summers (even heat waves in the orange and reddish zones).

Succulents are also gorgeous and actually take on beautiful colours with sun and a bit of heat-stress.

So consider succulents for your yard, deck, balcony, patio or cottage.

We have lots of pre-arranged pots, baskets and individual plants to choose from in our retail greenhouse open Saturdays and Sundays 10 -5.

Succulents make absolute sense during our Saskatchewan summers!

This is exactly why we walk into the greenhouse every morning — because surprises like this might be waiting for us any time of the year.

Our Epiphyllum — orchid cactus — decided to put on a show this morning , and honestly, we have no words. That red. 🤩That pink/coral. 🤩Last night nothing. Today splendor! 🌺🌸 Blooms this dramatic from a cactus still feels like a little miracle every single time, even after all these years of watching them.

Come see them in person this Saturday and Sunday so you can catch them before they’re gone — these beauties are fleeting, and they are absolutely worth the tranquil, short summer drive.

Never wanting to diss the many beautiful birds that grace our acreage, we must say that over the years we have found birds’ nests in the least secure and most inconvenient spots imaginable!

Birdbrain spot #1506 for a robin to build a nest?

On top of a ladder, in a building we’re trying to renovate to get ready to open the Clay Pigeons Antique Shop, after we are done readying the restaurant and the poolside deck to try to get them open ASAP. With all that going on mom and dad will have lots of time to raise their babies.

Perhaps the robins were offended by the new antique shop name? Or perhaps they were just enticed by those beautiful stained glass windows. They do cast a certain glow. 🌈

At any rate, as Roger has always said for about the last 26 years: Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was Solar Gardens. 😆

Onwards and upwards, our avian friends! Waaay up ⬆️

Last night was another 6-course Italian dinner and we are already planning the next one! We are now taking reservations for the June 27 dinner. The June menu has yet to be finalized, but we know it will once again involve generous amounts of delicious housemade authentic Italian food🥙.

It’s a wonderfully busy day at SG while we prepare for tonight’s 6-course Italian dinner. Our Tasting Studio and succulent greenhouses are open, and our wonderful greenhouse staff have also been busy creating a variety of preplanted succulent arrangements including this gorgeous succulent picture frame. Stop by to see our many individual succulents, planters, pots and pre-planted arrangements, and sample some delicious balsamics and olive oils! On what seems like the first true gardening weekend of the year, we hope that you can come and visit us today or tomorrow between 10 and 5.

EVERY POT HAS A STORY… ALMOST

One of our favourite parts of spring at Solar Gardens?

When you bring your pots back to be planted anew. 🌿
And lately, it seems almost every pot that comes through the greenhouse door arrives with a story.

The woman who inherited her neighbour’s pot and returns with it every year as a quiet tribute. The pots made in pottery classes, full of pride and fingerprints. The ones that graced the head table at a wedding.

Of course, not every tale is sentimental. There's the teenager who dropped one off recently and announced, deadpan: "My grandma made me bring this out”.

We planted it beautifully. Grandma will be proud.

We love all of it.

We can create an arrangement in any pot of your choice.

Drop by our acreage with your container of choice and we can give you a quote for planting up your pot.

Or text photos of your pot to Roger at 306-280-2762 and he can give you a quote. (Be sure to have a tape measure handy so that we can know your pot’s dimensions and measurements.)

If we aren’t busy when you drop your pot off, we might be able to fill it for you while you shop. But usually, you will need to drop it off and pick it up a few days later.
🌱

If your pot has a story, we would love to hear it. Bring it to us and we will work some magic. (If your pot doesn’t have a story, send it in for a little planting magic via your grandson.😄 )

You know we’re all about succulents and good food. But did you know sometimes we’re about…turtles 🐢 and tortoises? We have both.

Meet Rhubarb. She (he?) is a red-footed tortoise. But as quiet and shy and small as she is, she frightens the dogs to death. When they get a glimpse of her from 5 feet away they slowly start backing away, as if they move too fast she’s going to leap upon them to wrestle them to the ground.

She’s a constant companion to Chris in his ceramic studio. Her beauty inspires him to invent wacky glazes and crazy pieces everyday.

Of particular note is her beautiful shell and red dots 🔴🔴🔴 on her legs.

We love her.
