Brand New. Feels Like It's Been There for Decades.

The checking in these timbers isn't a flaw. We planned for it. For the Nicola Lake Estate Project, we chose boxed heart timbers specifically for that weathered look—the natural checking you'd find in an old barn beam, earned over decades. Add a circular-sawn finish, and our clients ended up with something most people spend a lifetime searching for: a brand-new home with the warmth of aged timber.

On this project, we handled the design, timber, and SIP supply. Mettler Construction built it, and Napanee Design handled the interiors. It's a specific brief. You have to know what you're reaching for and how to get there. We enjoyed delivering it.

Happy National Forest Week! Before it's a beam, it's a tree. Before it's a tree, it's decades of growth. We spend a lot of time thinking about the material we work with. Where it comes from, how long it took to grow, what it deserves to become. National Forest Week is a good reminder that responsible sourcing isn't a box to check. It's part of building something that actually makes sense. We use sustainably harvested coastal Douglas fir and build to last. That's the only way this works long-term.

A Contemporary Country Estate - One of the things we think about on an equestrian property is how all the buildings talk to each other. At this Langley estate, we ran the same dark bandsawn timbers through the main house, the equestrian centre, and the outbuildings. Standing anywhere on the property, it reads as one cohesive thing, not a house with stuff scattered around it. That kind of continuity takes planning from the start. By far the most unique and challenging project we’ve done to date.

A 50-foot accordion door opens the living room completely to the ocean — and the tolerances required to make that work cleanly drove every structural decision above it. The solution was an 8-foot by 14-foot curved laminated beam, reinforced with a curved steel beam to handle the span.

All the posts are locally sourced peeled cedar logs, including a 3-foot diameter centre log that stops everyone who walks through the door. Getting square-edged Douglas fir timberwork to fit seamlessly with organic log work is the kind of problem that challenges and inspires the crew in equal measure. This one did both.

Jamie Martin Designs brought the vision. Rob Parsons Construction built it alongside us.

Hip. Both the roof and the house.

The roofline on this project was the most complicated we have ever taken on. An array of valleys and hips, each one requiring the timber frame to fit together like a lid. Precise, locked in, no margin for close enough.

The client knew exactly what he wanted. A retired engineer from the timber business, he was particular about the woodwork in a way that raised the standard for everyone on the project. Timber details had to align with trim details. Trim details had to align with the window layout.

The whole team brought that same discipline to every decision. Builder Solutions-Based Construction and Brash Designs made sure nothing was left to chance on the finish side. The result is a beach house where everything lines up.

Lifting 75-foot curved glulam beams over an active street requires one thing above everything else: a plan with no room for surprises.

At the Safeway site, we coordinated every lift while traffic kept moving below. The canopies went up clean — not because it was easy, but because the work had been done before anything left the ground.

That’s what good logistics actually looks like.

This one started with a conversation between a homeowner, his friends, and a blank lot in Squamish.

The Crumpit Woods Project was never about maximizing square footage. It was about fitting the landscape and adding just enough timber detail to make it feel like somewhere you’d actually want to spend time.

Sometimes the best builds are the ones that don’t try too hard.
