--------------------------------------------------------------------------The 2026 turbot season has started successfully for Arctic Fishery Alliance and its owner Communities of Grise Fiord. Resolute Bay, Arctic Bay and Qikiqtarjuaq.
We have been very busy getting our vessels ready for this fishery . We are a little late posting this update; however, we do want to share our good news at this early stage in the season.
On July 6 Suvak landed her first and only trip of the turbot fishery for 2026. She fished a full load in the 0B Competitive fishery.
We are also very pleased to announce that the next day, on July 7, Kiviuq I also landed with a full load. She also fished the 0B Competitive fishery. For both vessels combined, there was a little over 575 tonnes landed in just 40 fishing days of fishing. (13 days Suvak and 27 days Kiviuq I).
Since our landings in Greenland, Suvak has now returned to port in St John’s NL and Kiviuq I has started on trip 2, in NAFO area OA. Kiviuq I is more than adequately equipped to catch all of AFA’s quota with ease. We will finish our 2026 season at least 4-6 weeks quicker then any other year in AFA’s history. Note that Kiviuq I can unconditionally do this on its own without Suvak’s participation
Our Operations Manager visited Nuuk, Greenland to help with the logistics for both vessels and crew. This helped them get ready for their next assignments, Kiviuq I for Trip # 2 and Suvak’s return to St. John’s.
Prior to visiting Greenland, our Operations Manager took our research vessel, Kiviuq II to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia for its annual refit. This went well and the vessel is now back in St. John’s getting ready for another season of research with the Ocean Tracking Group. We also have plans in motion to secure other research projects for Kiviuq II.
This season is shaping up to be successful for us all Now we would like to share a few pictures.

The 2026 Turbot Season has begun!!!! We here at the Arctic Fishery Alliance are pleased to Report that our Flagship, Kiviuq 1,has officially sailed as of June 1, 2026. This year is ramping up to be a Stellar year for us here at the AFA, as this year was the first year we had the opportunity to participate in our first ever codfish Longlining trip, producing without a doubt the best quality cod on the east coast of Canada. We are extremely pleased with the results and can’t wait for the opportunity to do it again.

After the completion of our cod trip, Kiviuq 1 had her first full refit at NewDock shipyard, which went as smooth as possible and even better than anticipated, and she was deemed sturdy, and sound as a pound, with just preventative maintenance required!!! Upon the completion of her refit, there of course were a few more weeks of putting gear and supplies onboard prior to sailing.

Approximately on June 7, 2026, she will arrive in Nuuk Greenland to pick up all our remaining crewmembers from Nunavut who will be flying in directly from Iqaluit, for their ease and comfort on their Chartered flight. Once there, she will pick up all related packaging, to officially start her first trip of the season.

According to our plans, next week, our tried and tested Vessel, Suvak, will also sail again for the 0B fishing grounds North of the 60th parallel. This year marks her 17th season sailing on behalf of the AFA. We here are so very proud of all her accomplishments over these years, as she is the vessel who solidified us as a company, and she is a true work horse. She also has completed her annual refit and is chomping at the bit to head to the races as it were, and we will post accordingly. (pictures to follow)

We here in St John’s, along with our owners in Grise Fiord, Resolute Bay, Arctic Bay, and Qikiqtarjuaq, would sincerely like to wish the Captains and Crews of both vessels, a very safe and prosperous year.

Fisherman’s Prayer
May there always be fair winds and following seas, may you have a fish in every mesh, may you have a fish on every hook, or, may your cod ends always be full, long may your big jib draw, and to all men involved, may you have a safe, yet Prosperous 2026 Fishing season !!!
