Nail pops in drywall: that small bump in your wall or ceiling is a fastener that has moved. Framing dries and shifts, and dry winter air can speed it up. Painting over it won’t fix it. Add a screw into the stud next to the popped nail, fill with two or three thin coats of joint compound, sand smooth, then prime and paint.

A sudden cluster of pops or water stains can mean a bigger problem, so get it checked. Older home? Test old compound and ceiling texture for asbestos before sanding.

How to soundproof a wall: four upgrades that make a home office or suite wall quieter. Seal every gap with acoustic sealant and putty pads on electrical boxes. Fill the stud cavity with dense mineral wool. Add mass with two layers of 5/8 in. drywall. Decouple the wall with resilient channel or staggered studs, and plan it before the drywall goes up.
