Myth: Pipe bursting is too disruptive to use in built-up areas.

Fact: When properly planned, pipe bursting can be executed with minimal surface disturbance and limited impact to surrounding infrastructure.

Rather than digging up an entire street, PW Trenchless uses a bursting rig and HDPE pipe to fracture and replace the existing line underground. This method may reduce:

🔹 Surface excavation
🔹 Haul-away and backfill volumes
🔹 Traffic and community disruption

As with any trenchless approach, the success depends on site conditions, pipe material, and alignment, but when it fits, pipe bursting can be a cost-effective and low-disruption solution.

Creating a surface opening is one of the most expensive, disruptive, and environmentally impactful parts of any project. The underground space created for utilities is the most valuable part of any installation.

When the time comes to rehabilitate or replace the pipe, trenchless methods allow municipalities to maximize the value of that initial investment. They allow the rehabilitation or replacement of pipe through minimal points of access, without the need to re-excavate entire lengths of the project.

Rehab or replace the pipe, not the hole in the ground.

When a sinkhole appeared on Highway 1 in Hope, immediate action and effective solutions were necessary to restore safe traffic flow.

PW Trenchless was brought in on an emergency basis to stabilize the highway and prevent further damage. In 2017, PW Trenchless completed a record-breaking sewer upsize for the City of Maple Ridge. The sanitary pipe running through Kanaka Creek Park was successfully upsized from 375mm (15”) to 900mm (36”).

Our approach minimized ground disturbance and tree removal requirements in an environmentally sensitive area. Despite spring flooding near the Fraser River, the team adapted the work plan and completed the project in five months, earning Honourable Mention for Project of the Year at the N***T 2018 No-Dig Conference.
