Happy New Year from Layton’s Lumber. Did you know, Layton’s Lumber is one of the oldest businesses within our local community and industry.
In 2022 our family owned business celebrated 120 years of service to our Northside and surrounding communities. We have been fortunate to remain locally owned and operated since our doors were opened by Charles Layton in 1902. Our current third generation owner, Charlie Layton, only recently retired from daily work in the office and out in the yard along side his staff serving costumers, something he truly enjoyed until the youthful age of 85. We were the first local business to have a delivery truck to better serve you…and Charlie may have been employed long enough to have learned to drive in it, kidding. His son Donald has dedicated his time to working along side his father managing the yard for more than 40 years. His granddaughter Morganne was fortunate to have the chance to work along side her father and grandfather for the last five years. This summer, Donald’s six year old grandson, Ethan, a sixth generation family member showed great interest and had fun putting on his work gloves and learning some tricks of the trade.
We would like to say Thank You and acknowledge our current hard working and dedicated staff members; John, Geraldine, Barry, Dave, Donald (Duck) and Steven. Combined, our current staff have over 200 years of employment with Layton’s Lumber. We won’t include their average ages. We are grateful for their contributions, the ups and downs and everything in between over the last 40+ years. You have allowed for our longevity and for our doors to remain open in Sydney Mines. We have been fortunate to employ numerous people in our 120 years, and it’s always nice to see familiar faces, hear stories of years past and to have contributed to local employment opportunities, trades programs and community organizations.
The continued success of our business is because of you, the members of our small but supportive communities. To our loyal contractors, customers, distributors, truck drivers, delivery people, sales reps, fellow industry businesses, ABSDA & Castles members, and anyone not mentioned, Thank You. Navigating the recent years through our second pandemic as a Northside business, but first for current employees, created several changes, obstacles and worries for everyone. We are grateful for your continued support throughout it all and to see so many new faces in recent years too. We are wishing everyone health and happiness for 2023 and look forward to continuing to be a local option for truss manufacturing and a building supplies retailer.
Cheers to the New Year!
