Impala Canada

Impala Canada Impala Canada operates the Lac des Iles Mine, 90 minutes northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The 30-year-old LDI Mine is one of two pure palladium sources in North America. Palladium, used in catalytic converters, reduces harmful emissions from vehicles. We are ramping up production to become one of Canada’s largest, lowest-cost and safest underground mines producing palladium, a metal that contributes to a cleaner global environment. Palladium is listed by the Government of Canada as one

of 31 minerals critical for the sustainable economic success of our country. Palladium is used to reduce harmful emissions from gas-powered vehicles, and as countries around the world actively increase emissions-reduction programs, the global demand for palladium has also been increasing.

A veteran and a rookie, Monika Jorgenson and Amy Prochnicki, are two volunteers on the LDI Mine Rescue crew, and both have helped to encourage other women to join the team. 🤩

“I actually joined Mine Rescue without knowing specifically what was involved,” Monika said. “I just knew that I’m always looking to add to my skill set and I want help out in an emergency.”

Monika is a senior metallurgist and she hadn’t done any first responder training until joining the Mine Rescue team in 2018. She was the only woman on the team for a long time and helped to bring home two district competition titles as the team’s technician. She is thrilled to see more women join the roster and encourages anyone interested in it, to sign up for an introductory course to see if it’s a good fit.

Mine rescue training was also Amy’s first time learning emergency response skills and she said the experience has changed how she views safety in general.

“I was apprehensive about joining the Mine Rescue team at first because of my little knowledge in rescue operations,” said Amy, who has been on the team for about a year. “Mine Rescue is not just about the physical aspect, it involves teamwork, resilience, mental strength, accountability, and a willingness to learn. There is so much space and opportunity for women in Mine Rescue, and many different roles within.”

Thank you Monika and Amy for sharing your experience on the Mine Rescue team with us and for encouraging others to give it a go!

Continuing our series introducing the women volunteers of Impala Canada’s Mine Rescue team, meet Jaimee Zoccole and Wendy Wang. 🤩

The duo, who are friends and colleagues, are both relatively new to the Mine Rescue team, and both decided to join, on part, because they wanted to be more prepared to jump in and help if an emergency occurred.

“I am particularly interested in composing myself in high stress emergencies,” said Jaimee, who is on the site services crew.

The Mine Rescue training is Wendy’s first experience with emergency response.

“The introductory course provided a wealth of knowledge and brainstorming sessions on what approaches and protocols to use. It also put us in emergency simulations with things like smoke and darkness, and scenarios needing first aid, to challenge our knowledge and reaction in an emergency,” Wendy said.

Wendy, who completed an Engineer-in-Training program at LDI and is now in a short-term planner role, said she was surprised at the amount of information and learning that Mine Rescue volunteers have to absorb.

“It’s a great honour to know that when an emergency happens, you have the skills to help the person next to you. It’s also a great responsibility. If you’re up for it, it could save someone’s life,” Wendy said.

Thank you to Jaimee and Wendy for sharing your Mine Rescue experience with us – we are lucky to have you two on the team. 💯
