Conclusion: We need another program and to make a significant impact, we need generous rebates that incent insulation and adding an air barrier to walls.

The federal government provided $2.6 billion for heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and other green upgrades to Canadians' homes through the Canada Greener Homes Grant. But did it make enough of a difference? A new report takes a closer look.

Air leakage, particularly when it’s in basements and into unheated attics is common cause of discomfort.

Sealing up the leaks at the top and bottom of your house can go a long way to reducing heat loss on colder days like today and keeping you more comfortable. This is commonly referred to as the stack effect.

We just visited a home with a decent amount of air leakage in the ceiling (see the attic hatch and pot lights) as well as the wall between their basement and crawl space. The homeowner plans to address it all themselves.

We love working with homeowners who want to roll up their sleeves and do some air sealing to make their home more comfortable and energy efficient (which is also a great way to prepare to switch to a heat pump).

Ontario has just announced that they are launching a rebate program. More details will be announced later in January when the program launches but it could include rebates for heat pumps, solar panels and energy audits. At Goldfinch Energy, we remain cautiously optimistic that this could help maintain the momentum to electrify our homes and keep fighting climate change.
