【LPGAS INDUSTRIAL NEWS JAPAN】 Bringing Inspiration to Society – Lecture on Intellectual Property at Okayama Hosen High School

On July 14, a special lecture titled Patent Technologies for Small Hydropower Generation and the Business Behind Them was held at Okayama Hosen High School (Okayama City, Japan). Mr. Jun Kuwahara, President of ELIS Co., Ltd., delivered the lecture as the guest speaker.

Mr. Kuwahara was invited to speak under the lecturer registration program of INPIT (Japan Patent Office's National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training), an independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The lecture aimed to help students deepen their understanding of technologies related to patent acquisition and businesses built on intellectual property, while fostering an appreciation for the protection and utilization of intellectual property rights, including patents, designs, and trademarks.

During the lecture, Mr. Kuwahara explained the background behind the development of ELIS's proprietary small hydropower generation system, WaterWeco®. He described how the company focused on sites with **low hydraulic head and high water velocity**, locations that had been difficult to utilize with conventional technologies, and how this innovative concept was protected through patents and successfully developed into a business.

He emphasized that **"the most important thing in technology development is not simply creating a new invention."** Instead, he explained that true innovation lies in identifying social challenges, developing solutions to those challenges, protecting those solutions as intellectual property, and designing a framework that enables them to be delivered to society.

ELIS Co., Ltd. is a member of Tsubame Holdings, whose core company is Tsubame Gas, an LP gas distributor headquartered in Okayama City. In June 2020, the company registered the intellectual property rights for WaterWeco® with patent offices in Japan, the United States, Europe, Taiwan, China, and other regions. In July of the following year, WaterWeco® was also selected for the Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP) operated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Tokyo Office, enabling the company to expand its market beyond Japan and promote the technology internationally.

# # # Comment from Mr. Jun Kuwahara

"Through this lecture, I hope the students realize that even familiar challenges can be addressed through fresh ideas, and that innovative ideas can contribute to society when protected and utilized as intellectual property.

Technologies that change the future begin with a spark of inspiration. However, transforming that inspiration into real value for society requires the power of intellectual property.

Our passionate team will continue to challenge ourselves to create new value through technological innovation and the effective use of intellectual property."

【INPIT】Lecture on Patent Innovation in Micro Hydropower at Okayama Hosen High School

Okayama, Japan- The Industrial Property Information and Training Center(INPIT) hosted a special lecture at Okayama Prefectural Okayama Hosen High School on July 14, 2026, from 15:30 to 16:30. The session, titled "Patent Technologies in Micro Hydropower and the Business Built Around Them," aimed to deepen students' understanding of patent-related technologies and the role of intellectual property in business development.

During the lecture, JUN(ELIS) introduced the development story of the company's proprietary micro hydropower technology WaterWeco®、highlighting the innovative focus on low-head, high-velocity river environments where conventional systems struggle to generate electricity. The presentation also outlined how this concept was transformed into a commercial venture.

The lecture emphasized that innovation is not merely about creating new technology. It begins with identifying social challenges, designing solutions that address those challenges, protecting those solutions through intellectual property, and building mechanisms that deliver them to society. This holistic approach-linking invention, protection, and implementation-was presented as the essence of true innovation.

Through this program, students were encouraged to recognize that new ideas can emerge from everyday challenges, and that intellectual property enables those ideas to create meaningful value for society. The session underscored the importance of nurturing creativity and understanding IP as a key driver in bringing technological inspiration to the world.

JUN(ELIS) commented, "Technologies that change the future begin with a spark of inspiration. But to deliver that inspiration to society, intellectual property is indispensable." The company will continue to pursue the creation of new value through the integration of technology and intellectual property.

【Announcement】Patent Granted in Mexico

When installing hydroelectric power equipment in agricultural waterways, for example, in agricultural canals, the flow rate significantly fluctuates depending on the season-non₋irrigation period (when irrigation is not conducted), irrigation period, and plowing period-making it difficult to maintain optimal energy generation efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce hydroelectric power equipment that can respond to the variations in water volume within the waterways. Additionally, it is equally required that the equipment does not require laborious debris removal and takes biodiversity into consideration. ELIS CO., LTD. will proceed with project formation with partners, including those in foreign countries, who can effectively utilize this intellectual property.

Open-Type Micro Hydropower Generator “WaterWeco®” Secures Patent in the Federative Republic of Brazil

ELIS Corporation (Headquarters: Okayama City, Japan) is pleased to announce that in November 2025, we have been granted a patent in the Federative Republic of Brazil for our independently developed open-type micro hydropower generator “WaterWeco®”. WaterWeco® is equipped with the world’s first mechanism that automatically adjusts the water inlet angle to the optimal position even when flow rate or water level fluctuates.

This breakthrough enables stable 24/7/365 power generation even in extremely small-scale water channels and low-head conditions (flow rate of approximately 2.0 m³/s 〜or higher and head of about 1.5 m), which were previously considered difficult for conventional micro-hydropower systems, such as agricultural irrigation canals and factory drainage channels. Brazil is home to countless untapped small water channels.

This technology is expected to make a significant contribution to off-grid power supply and electricity cost reduction in rural and industrial areas across the country. With this patent now secured, we will accelerate collaboration with local partners to expand deployment in the Brazilian market.

Regarding Turbine Control During Power Outages and Abnormal Operation

WaterWeco® can transmit abnormal operation signals to the control center via remote monitoring (optional) in the event of a power outage or turbine malfunction. In addition, by incorporating an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the system can enable the turbine to automatically rise.
