U of T Engineering researchers have developed a flexible foot pad for their Hopcopter โ a one-legged, hopping robot โ that lets it travel across sand, ice and other difficult terrain. The work is described in a new paper published in Advanced Intelligent Systems.
The Hopcopter is essentially a quadcopter-style drone perched on top of a single spring-loaded foot. It was inspired by the way birds hop and perch to conserve energy. Hopping lets it bound over obstacles that would stop most robots with legs or wheels, while carrying more weight than a standard drone.
โWe imagine it being used to conduct search and rescue after natural disasters, or inspect remote infrastructure such as pipelines or mining sites. We even dream of exploring places like Mars, where the atmosphere is too thin for most kinds of drones,โ says Professor Pakpong Chirarattananon (MIE), senior author on the paper.
