Attached is a recent story from the "Highlander" on Trillium's two 500kW solar farms in the region are nearing completion, as are all 15 other Trillium projects across Ontario!

The Trillium Solar Co-Op is looking for a few new members from Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Simcoe, and Peterborough counties (excluding residents of the cities of Barrie, Orillia, and Peterborough - as "single tier" communities residents aren't able to join a rural Co-Op like Trillium).

To join you're over eighteen, support clean, green solar energy generation, and have owned a home / land within one of the 4 counties for 2+ years! If more than one person is on the title to the property, all can join - there is no per household limit!

There is no time or financial commitment / requirement, nothing goes on your land, and all members will share annually in dividends generate by the Trillium solar farms - we estimate $25-$40 per member over the course of the 20 year contracts...yep, FREE MONEY for supporting clean, green, solar energy generation!

Visit www.trilliumpower.ca/membership to learn more - and any new members that join from Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Simcoe or Peterborough counties this week will receive a $30 "signing bonus" cheque once your membership is approved - PLUS, if you refer folks who join, you'll receive an additional $30 referral bonus for each referral who qualifies and joins!

On July 17th, 2019, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released the Applicant Guide for the Climate Action Incentive Fund (CAIF), a rebate program for businesses who are or will be investing in solar. The complete CAIF details can be found here.

The CAIF highlights are:
• Up to 25% of solar project’s total eligible costs available as a rebate
• No less than $20,000 CAD and no more than $250,000 CAD per project and per recipient
• A $250,000 CAD funding cap will apply to the group of applicant franchisees who operate under the same franchise trade name in each eligible province.
• Available to businesses in Ontario, New Brunswick, Manitoba & Saskatchewan
Important dates:
• July 2019 - SME Project Stream details release, registration via the SWIM portal opens for applications
• Summer / Fall 2019 – Applicants notified within 25 days of submission
• Funding Agreement – within 45 business days of the Approval-in-Principle notification

The average IRR for a rooftop solar project is around 13-18% when you include the recent tax benefits announced last November in the 2018 Fall Economic Statement. The funding being made available by the CAIF can see the IRR grow to 20-25%, even higher if the solar project is net-metered!

However, now is the time to act – we have a federal election in October and we’ve seen what happens if there is a change of government to renewable energy programs in the past!
When is funding secured?
The CAIF guide makes it clear that even though you can be selected for a CAIF grant and can incur costs after receiving an approval-in-principle notification, funding is only secure after a funding agreement has been finalized with the Government of Canada. What remains unclear is when is a funding agreement finalized, is it when the Applicant signs it or when both the Applicant and the ECCC sign it. If it is the latter, there continues to be a risk that a new government won’t execute these agreements.
Should I hire a contractor to being work now?
Do not begin work until you’ve received an approval-in-principle notification from the ECCC.
Even without the rebate, does roof-top solar make sense in Ontario?
Yes! In Ontario the IRR for a solar project is between 13 to 18% and payback for most medium size projects is 6 – 8 years (without the CAIF rebate assumed in the financial model!). If this financial return works for you, then you should carry on considering solar as an investment – but if you qualify for the CAIF, your IRR could increase to 20-25% (and higher if your project is net-metered)!
Free Solar Assessment
Let us do a Free Solar Assessment for your organization and show you how roof-top solar can save your business $ and lower and control your energy costs for 25+ years! Our modeling will detail your IRR & annual savings with both the Tax Incentives and CAIF factored in. You can then:
• Complete a Solar Pre-Feasibility Analysis (outputs are required for your CAIF application)
• Complete your CAIF Pre-Requisites
• Submit your CAIF Application
CAIF Applications should be submitted by the end of August in order for them to be reviewed and processed by the ECCC in advance of the upcoming election. Now is the time to act, as there is both a limited amount of funding available through the CAIF and there is a time constraint to complete your application. Contact us today to begin!
