Did you know some of the earliest electrical infrastructure in Toronto dates back to the 1880s?

Our team uncovered something incredible: an Edison tube junction box — connected to a cable system that likely helped power some of the city’s very first streetlights, back when electricity in Toronto was just getting started.

What makes this find even more unique? It’s a transition piece — bridging early electrical systems. The cable attached actually predates paper-insulated lead-covered (PILC) cable. It features cloth insulation with a lead cover, a rare design that’s almost never seen today. This type of system (known as an Edison tube system) was among the world’s first underground electrical networks, laying the groundwork for the grids we rely on today.
