The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto is an endowed research institute with over 80 faculty, postdocs, students, and staff, dedicated to innovative technology, groundbreaking research, world-class training, and public outreach. The research themes of its faculty and Dunlap Fellows span the Universe and include: optical, infrared and radio instrumentation,

Dark Energy, large-scale structure, the Cosmic Microwave Background, the interstellar medium, galaxy evolution, cosmic magnetism, and time-domain science. Dunlap of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and other researchers across the University of Toronto's three campuses together comprise the leading concentration of astronomers in Canada, at the leading research university in the country. Professor Ting Li works with Dunlap Institute senior research associate Dr. Shaojie Chen, graduate student Jiayi (Emma) Xu and undergraduate student Ziang (Frank) Chen to install their Digital Micrometre Device-based spectrograph onto the telescope at the University of Toronto's observatory on the site of the E. C. Carr Astronomical Observatory. Located in The Blue Mountains, this site, owned by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (), boasts beautiful clear skies, ideal for testing new scientific instruments once the sun goes down!

👋 Hello from CHORD! University of Toronto Astronomy graduate student Sophia Da Costa poses with fellow grad students Evan Davies-Velie from McGill University, and Tobias Weiss from York University. This drone shot shows the 80 completed dishes so far, 8 of which are fully operational and ready to take data!

Short for the Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector, CHORD is a radio observatory located at the National Research Council of Canada’s (NRC) Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, near Penticton, British Columbia. The finished array will consist of 512 dishes at the main site, as well as 64 dishes at two outrigger stations at the Greenbank Observatory in West Virginia and at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory in California, and is expected to be complete in 2027. It's primary goal will be to search for Fast Radio Bursts, mysterious and transient radio signals caused by an astrophysical phenomenon not yet understood by scientists!

Today the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics turns 18 years old! On May 21, 2008, the Institute was established on the University of Toronto St. George campus, thanks to the endowment received after the sale of the David Dunlap Observatory. We're so proud of all that has been achieved in the last 18 years and are excited to see what comes next!
