Summerhill is also proud to be the operations partner for Scout Environmental (scoutenvironmental.com), a not-for-profit organization focused on creating and delivering public initiatives that generate positive environmental and health impacts. The Summerhill team was in Ottawa this week for the 3rd Annual Canada Home Energy Justice Conference!

The conference brought together academics, researchers and energy efficiency professionals to share research, explore best practices and discuss how to strengthen energy efficiency programs for low-income households and communities.

Summerhill’s Jade Siewnarine presented alongside Harri Makivirta in the session "From Program Delivery to Energy Justice: Advancing Indigenous-Led Community Retrofits Through Partnership and Adaptive Design." Drawing on their experience delivering the IESO Save on Energy First Nations Community Building Retrofit Program, they shared insights on supporting First Nation communities with energy efficiency projects and the importance of community-focused approaches to program delivery.

It was a great opportunity to connect with sector professionals, share insights and explore practical approaches to advancing energy justice through program delivery.

We’re heading to Toronto, Ontario for this month’s employee highlight!

Alison Trenton joined the marketing team at Summerhill in May 2021 and has spent the past five years growing alongside the company. Over that time, she’s had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects while continuing to grow her skills in marketing and social media.

When asked what she enjoys most about working at Summerhill, Alison says it’s a tie between the work and the people. “I’m biased, but the Summerhill team really is the best. Even working remotely and with my coworkers across the country, we find ways to support each other and you can tell everyone really cares about the work.”

For Alison, one of the best things about living in Toronto is having so many ways to spend her time. She lives in the east end, where she has easy access to parks, trails and the beach, while also enjoying being able to head downtown for concerts and Blue Jays games. “I like to keep busy, so I love that there’s always somewhere to go to learn a new skill like pottery or take dance classes.”

We’re heading to Harrington, Prince Edward Island (just outside Charlottetown) for this month’s employee highlight!

As Director of Client Solutions, Trudy Spooner has a long history with Summerhill. She first worked with the organization in Regina from 2010 to 2012 before rejoining the team in Charlottetown in 2019.

When asked what she enjoys most about working at Summerhill, Trudy doesn't hesitate to point to the people. "Definitely my co-workers. I work with great people all around who make the stressful days easier to handle because I know I have a supportive team to lean on. Also, the flexibility is pretty wonderful and makes it so that I almost never have to choose between my kids and my job."

For Trudy, the work itself is just as meaningful as the people she works with. "Working on energy efficiency programs that genuinely improve people’s lives is very satisfying. The mission driven nature of the organization is very motivating."

Home is another place that brings Trudy a lot of joy. She loves the close-knit feel of living near Charlottetown. "I love the size of the place, it’s so easy to get around and I spend very little of my life in traffic. In the summer, on nice nights, it’s really easy to pack up some drinks and sandwiches and head to the beach for the evening. Our kids love it and it’s a fun way to be outdoors more. I also love that it’s pretty likely I run into someone I know when I walk out the door."

We’re heading to North Vancouver, British Columbia for this month’s employee highlight!

Mahtab joined Summerhill in February 2025 as an Application Reviewer and transitioned into a Team Lead role in September 2025. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, “From the beginning, I felt supported by a team that genuinely encourages growth and collaboration.”

One of Mahtab’s favourite things about working at Summerhill is the supportive and collaborative culture. “Even though we work remotely, there’s a strong sense of teamwork and connection—it feels like I’ve known my colleagues for years,” she says. She also values the opportunity to learn from her colleagues and leadership team while contributing to work that supports energy efficiency and a more sustainable future.

Outside of work, Mahtab enjoys making the most of everything British Columbia has to offer. “The nature here is stunning,” she shares. Living in North Vancouver means being surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes, and ocean views, with opportunities to spot local wildlife along the seawall. She also appreciates the mild climate, which helps support her active lifestyle of running, going to the gym, and spending time outdoors.

Having grown up in Iran and built a life in Canada, Mahtab is grateful for the opportunities she has found here and is proud to be part of a team helping create positive environmental change. When she’s not working, you can often find her traveling, exploring new places, or enjoying the outdoors around the Vancouver area.

This week, members of the Summerhill and Scout Environmental teams were in Halifax for CLIMAtlantic’s Atlantic Adaptation Conference, joining organizations from across Canada to talk climate resilience, adaptation and community preparedness.

As part of the conference, Catherine Wood, Director of Programs, participated in the poster session, sharing insights on Scout’s program Stay Cool – Preparing for Heat Waves, Together. The poster highlighted how the project supports PEI households in preparing for extreme heat through practical tools, accessible resources and clear, targeted messaging.

A valuable few days of conversations on how we can better support communities as climate impacts intensify.

We’re heading to Toronto, Ontario for this month’s employee highlight!

Portia Baladad joined Summerhill in Fall 2020 as a Marketing Manager, though her connection to the organization started earlier. After working at a tech start-up based in Summerhill’s Toronto office, she was already familiar with the space and was later referred to the team through that network.

Since joining, she has become an integral part of the team, bringing curiosity and collaboration to her role. “My favourite part of working at Summerhill is the people. I know it’s a cliché to say, but it really is true,” she says. Across a remote team, she values the strong sense of camaraderie and the fact that support is always just a message away.

She also appreciates being part of a women-led organization, where trust and support create opportunities to learn and grow both professionally and personally.

Outside of work, Portia enjoys the balance the city offers. “Living in the city means easy access to great food and entertainment, but I also love being close to nature,” she shares. Whether she is walking, biking, or running along trails by the Don Valley River or Lake Ontario, there is always something to explore. She often passes birders during migration season and has even spotted a deer on one of her runs.
