We’re heading to North Vancouver, British Columbia for this month’s employee highlight!

Mahtab joined Summerhill in February 2025 as an Application Reviewer and transitioned into a Team Lead role in September 2025. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, “From the beginning, I felt supported by a team that genuinely encourages growth and collaboration.”

One of Mahtab’s favourite things about working at Summerhill is the supportive and collaborative culture. “Even though we work remotely, there’s a strong sense of teamwork and connection—it feels like I’ve known my colleagues for years,” she says. She also values the opportunity to learn from her colleagues and leadership team while contributing to work that supports energy efficiency and a more sustainable future.

Outside of work, Mahtab enjoys making the most of everything British Columbia has to offer. “The nature here is stunning,” she shares. Living in North Vancouver means being surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes, and ocean views, with opportunities to spot local wildlife along the seawall. She also appreciates the mild climate, which helps support her active lifestyle of running, going to the gym, and spending time outdoors.

Having grown up in Iran and built a life in Canada, Mahtab is grateful for the opportunities she has found here and is proud to be part of a team helping create positive environmental change. When she’s not working, you can often find her traveling, exploring new places, or enjoying the outdoors around the Vancouver area.

The Summerhill team was in Fredericton, NB for the 2026 Energizing Efficiency Conference this week!

As a sponsor, Summerhill joined energy leaders and innovators to explore the technologies, policies and customer solutions shaping a smarter, more sustainable energy future.

Cara Sweeny, VP of Business Development, presented Heat Pumps in the Real World: What 4,000 Canadian Homeowners Tell Us About Adoption, Performance and Demand Flexibility, sharing findings from our recent heat pump survey conducted in partnership with Clean Energy Canada.

It was a great opportunity to connect with industry partners, share insights and contribute to the ongoing conversation around energy efficiency and electrification.

This week, members of the Summerhill and Scout Environmental teams were in Halifax for CLIMAtlantic’s Atlantic Adaptation Conference, joining organizations from across Canada to talk climate resilience, adaptation and community preparedness.

As part of the conference, Catherine Wood, Director of Programs, participated in the poster session, sharing insights on Scout’s program Stay Cool – Preparing for Heat Waves, Together. The poster highlighted how the project supports PEI households in preparing for extreme heat through practical tools, accessible resources and clear, targeted messaging.

A valuable few days of conversations on how we can better support communities as climate impacts intensify.

We’re heading to Toronto, Ontario for this month’s employee highlight!

Portia Baladad joined Summerhill in Fall 2020 as a Marketing Manager, though her connection to the organization started earlier. After working at a tech start-up based in Summerhill’s Toronto office, she was already familiar with the space and was later referred to the team through that network.

Since joining, she has become an integral part of the team, bringing curiosity and collaboration to her role. “My favourite part of working at Summerhill is the people. I know it’s a cliché to say, but it really is true,” she says. Across a remote team, she values the strong sense of camaraderie and the fact that support is always just a message away.

She also appreciates being part of a women-led organization, where trust and support create opportunities to learn and grow both professionally and personally.

Outside of work, Portia enjoys the balance the city offers. “Living in the city means easy access to great food and entertainment, but I also love being close to nature,” she shares. Whether she is walking, biking, or running along trails by the Don Valley River or Lake Ontario, there is always something to explore. She often passes birders during migration season and has even spotted a deer on one of her runs.

Happy Earth Day!

This year’s theme, Our Power, Our Planet, highlights how everyday actions shape the places we live and work.

At Summerhill, we know energy efficiency can feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. By helping Canadians think differently about their energy use, we’re supporting sustainable homes and communities through simple, meaningful conversations.

Let’s keep the conversation going 💚

We’re heading to Riverview, New Brunswick for this month’s employee highlight!

Kristopher Pope joined Summerhill in 2015, but his journey into the energy efficiency space started a little earlier after having an energy audit completed on his home. Inspired to learn more, he read Keeping the Heat In, an NRCan guide to building science, insulation, and air sealing. Kris put that knowledge into action by insulating his attic and completing air sealing to the recommended levels. After seeing the results firsthand, he was hooked and reached out to Summerhill soon after.

Since then, Kris has grown with the organization, bringing both hands-on experience and a genuine passion for the work. “I enjoy Summerhill's work culture as well as my colleagues and clients. I also enjoy the feeling that our work and expertise in the energy efficiency industry matters.”

Now based in Riverview, part of the Greater Moncton Area, Kris appreciates the balance the community offers. “This community has everything we need either right here or nearby while maintaining a small town feel and is a great place to raise kids.” With easy access to the Bay of Fundy and the sandy beaches along the Northumberland Strait, it’s a place that suits both work and life.

Outside of work, Kris enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. They often spend their time gardening, hiking, biking, camping, and swimming. He is also a musician and occasionally performs with ECMA-nominated bands Acres and Acres and Caledonia.

Energy upgrades don’t happen in theory. They happen in real homes, under real conditions.

That’s why Summerhill partnered with Clean Energy Canada to hear directly from nearly 3,800 Canadian heat pump owners about what motivated their decision and how their systems performed after installation.

The findings show that most households saw the benefits they were looking for, from lower energy bills to improved comfort, and that satisfaction remained high across regions and home types.

Insights like these help inform better programs, clearer communication, and stronger outcomes for homeowners.

Listening to homeowners is essential to understanding how clean energy solutions work in the real world.

To help bring Canadian heat pump owners’ experiences to light, Summerhill partnered with Clean Energy Canada on Heat Pump Owners Have Their Say. Through a national survey of nearly 3,800 households, the research captured what motivated people to install heat pumps and how they are performing once installed.

The results show high satisfaction across regions and home types, reinforcing the value of grounding energy programs and policies in lived experience.
