Mansa Musa, the ruler of the Mali Empire in the 14th century, is often considered the richest person in history.

His empire controlled huge gold mines in West Africa at a time when gold was one of the world’s most valuable resources. Historians say his wealth was so enormous that it’s nearly impossible to calculate in modern terms.

His most famous moment came during his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324. Musa traveled with a massive caravan of soldiers, servants, camels, and countless amounts of gold.

As he passed through cities like Cairo, he generously handed out gold to the poor, merchants, and officials. The problem was that he gave away so much that the value of gold in Egypt reportedly dropped, causing inflation and economic disruption that lasted for years.

Beyond his wealth, Mansa Musa also helped turn cities like Timbuktu into major centers of education, trade, and Islamic culture.
