Hosting offsites allows our team members to build and develop connections, while also providing an opportunity for strategic planning.

Recently, the cross-functional team for our Selector application—which allows BenchSci users to find reagents and model systems using insights derived from published literature—came together in person to participate in workshops, hear presentations from different departments, attend a mindfulness session, and participate in team-building exercises.

With over 25 people on the team, Senior Project Manager Sarah Sawaya applied her project management skills to plan, organize, and implement an impactful offsite! “I’m super grateful to get to work with such a highly motivated, talented, kind, and inclusive team!” she shared.

Can you guess where Arianne Vu-Lague, Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist, is working from? 💻

"Being an avid traveler, I'm extremely grateful to have an employer that gives me the freedom and flexibility to work abroad for up to 90 days a year.

Having a change of scenery was the perfect reset I needed to refocus and boost my motivation so I can do my best work. I usually start my day with sunrise yoga and finish the work day with sunset surf lessons. 🏄‍♀️

I plan on taking full advantage of my trip by exploring further on the weekends!"

When Sean Holloran, one of our Enterprise Scientific Liaisons, performed the experiment in his BenchSci welcome package, he knew he could rely on his lab assistant Tater Tot to help him out. 🧪

"The remote onboarding process has been fantastic. Every person and department that we have met has been welcoming and wants us to succeed," shared Sean.

Performing a fun experiment, being welcomed with a team lunch, and having an onboarding buddy walk you through life at BenchSci are just a few of the ways we welcome new team members.

"One piece of advice I wish I’d gotten when I first joined the industry is that careers hardly ever follow a straightforward path, and there's more than one type of scientist in the world. You can be a scientist without being in the lab. It's not just about what you can do with a pipette in your hand—your actual scientific knowledge is much more important."

Ana Ramos has enjoyed success as both an R&D Scientist and a Cross-functional Team Lead at BenchSci before moving to her current role as a Product Analyst. Read more about her journey: https://blog.benchsci.com/science-careers-dont-always-follow-a-straightforward-path

As we celebrate , we asked Alana Bennett, one of our Product Marketing Managers, to share what Pride means to her.

“Pride to me is feeling footloose and fancy-free, covered in glitter at a daytime disco, surrounded by my chosen family. It’s a celebration of community that I do not take for granted. I benefit from those who came before me, especially the BIPOC 2SLGBTQIA+, who championed the rights that make it legal for me to love the person that I do today.”

With a passion for world travel, Alana is getting ready to head to Canada’s East Coast and various Greek islands. “I’m taking advantage of BenchSci’s amazing Roam Like You’re Working From Home program, which will give me the opportunity to spend the summer enjoying Pride events throughout Europe.”

At BenchSci, we’re committed to building an inclusive workplace so that all of our team members have the opportunity to thrive at work. “Queer people like me don’t just come out once; it’s over and over. In meetings, at lunches, at the bank, at the gym, etc. It’s a bit of a Russian Doll episode (minus the ci******es). BenchSci’s investments in DEI facilitates an open and safe work environment where the barrier to come out was totally removed. It’s nice to feel like I can show up and contribute as my full self.”

Looking ahead, Alana says, “It’s important for more people who are traditionally underrepresented in tech to be provided upward mobility in the industry. I think that more diversity and inclusion, investment in scholarships, paid internships, and STEM education programs for youth would benefit 2SLGBTQIA+ folks in tech.”

Being a remote-first company means our team members have the freedom to work and live where they are happiest. It also means that they happen to cross paths on occasion!

“Had a great excuse to get a fab lunch in Cambridge with a colleague I had never met in person before. It was awesome to meet Matan! We had to get the traditional Cambridge shot in front of King’s College,” shared James Malone.

"Working remotely from across the globe has allowed me to see my family (who live abroad) more often and explore new parts of the world. But working remotely also means that I need to build and foster my relationships with coworkers online, which can sometimes take a bit longer. So I try to meet in person whenever possible—even if it’s just to share a slice of pizza like James and I did," said Matan Berson.

At BenchSci, our mission is to exponentially increase the speed and quality of life-saving research by empowering scientists with the world's most advanced biomedical artificial intelligence. Our team members are driven by this mission and a desire to make a real impact, both at work and in their personal lives.

For Hassan Muhammad, this means joining Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's annual . "I feel very strongly that we don’t direct enough funds to finding cures for life-threatening diseases, like cancer. And with people living longer, there are going to be more age-related illnesses. I don’t want anyone close to me worrying about that in the future, so if I can do something about it, raising awareness and funds, maybe that’ll get us closer to curing these things for good," explains Hassan.

After winning BenchSci's spelling bee during our virtual Homecoming, Hassan donated $500 of his prize to support cancer care and research. Currently, he has raised a total of $2,000 but would like to achieve his goal of $5,000 CAD. You can support Hassan's ride here: https://hubs.ly/Q01bFs_50

"There are many things I want to do and goals I want to achieve. With the tendency to 'get there-reach that', I would forget to enjoy the moment and appreciate myself.

Yoga is all about moving slowly, with control and intention, about appreciating one small improvement at a time. I transfer what I learn on the mat to my life: to slow down and be grateful for each step I take. I think the key to good mental health is to love yourself and enjoy the process.

I started yoga during my undergrad, not long after moving to Canada. The cultural adjustment and pressure of school had put lots of stress on me. Yoga has helped me through difficult times and I enjoy every moment on the mat. After a few years of practicing, I decided to take the teacher training to be able to share that love of yoga with others.

Earlier this month, I led a yoga class with members of the BenchShe+ Employee Resource Group for . Running the event was really fun and made me realize that we are not just working together, we are supporting each other and having fun together. I love the culture at BenchSci. We are like a big family.

My favorite pose is the dancer pose (pictured). When I think of this pose, I think of what we're doing at BenchSci—dancing through challenges with cheer and enthusiasm," shared Anh Chu, one of our R&D Scientists.

"When BenchSci emerged in 2017, I started using the antibody platform...It really saved me lots of time. I could actually put that time into my lab work instead."

At the Black Professionals In Tech Network - BPTN Masterclass earlier this month, Victoria Hipolito was asked if she could see a future where healthcare is delivered entirely by AI and other digital technologies.

Here's what she had to say: "I believe we will always need a balance. We can't replace the human element and intuition that's involved in practicing medicine. Aside from diagnosing illnesses, treatment plans are often personalized based on specific patient preferences and sometimes physician intuition.

However, artificial intelligence and machine learning can empower physicians by gathering and summarizing the vast amount of information they need to make important clinical decisions. This can be especially critical when physicians are faced with complex diseases that require a multiparametric decision."
