Why does the retaining wall get poured before the house?
Two Homes, One Lot, Episode 1. We're building a three-storey custom home and a laneway home on the same lot in Vancouver. As of October 20, the old house is gone, the permits are in and the retaining wall forms are up.
Gordie walks the site and explains why the wall and the compaction come first. The wall holds back the soil so the site can be dug out and levelled. The fill behind it goes in 12-inch lifts, compacted one layer at a time, so the ground under the new homes doesn't settle later.
Up next: framing, then the laneway home. Stay tuned for Episode 2.
