Message on National Day for Truth and
Reconciliation

Each year on September 30, we commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of reflection brought forth by the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report (2015).

This day stands as a national observance for all Canadians of all the painful injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples as a result of assimilation policies adopted by both the Federal and Provincial governments.

From the tragic history of residential schools to day schools and boarding homes, generations of Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families, stripped of their language, culture and identity. The aim was to erase the very essence of Indigenous heritage.

In Eeyou Istchee, our language and culture remain strong despite all the survivors’ deep scars and the legacy of intergenerational trauma. Our journey of healing is ongoing. Through the strength of our resilient communities and cultural ties, and with the support of our allies, we look forward to a future filled with hope. Together, we strive for a clearer path, grounded in truth, understanding and reconciliation.

Let this day remind us all of the importance of listening, learning, and walking together on the road to healing and justice for Indigenous Peoples across Eeyou Istchee and beyond.

Orange Shirt Day: National Day of Truth and Reconciliation September 30 is a day honouring survivors of the Indian Residential School System, their families, communities and the children who never came home.

This is not only a day of remembrance in our nations but also an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the history of the residential school system and to remember, reflect and talk about the acts of genocide inflicted on our children. The scars that have been left are deep and painful but awareness of a not-so-distant truth and compassion from our neighbours are necessary steps on the path to reconciliation and healing.

We stand in solidarity with survivors from Eeyou Istchee and across the country who have been harmed or were witness of heinous acts committed by the residential school system. Our unity and resilience are a message of strength against a cruel system meant to take away our language, culture and pride. Despite this, we are still here and are raising the next generations to be proud contributing members of their communities and nations.

The Cree Nation Government continues to provide support to survivors and their families as efforts to uncover a difficult past on Fort-George Island are underway. We must continue to be there for one another as we take this journey together.

If you feel the need to talk, reach out to a family member or friend. The Wiichihiiwaauwin is also available toll-free 24/7

with Cree speakers ready to lend an ear and guide you towards services in your community: 1-833-632-4357. Remember
that you are loved.

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!

This June 21st, as we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day and recognize our unique heritage, rich culture and countless contributions to the fabric of Canadian society, we also honour the resiliency of Indigenous Peoples. As we continue to reflect upon the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves of Indigenous children, this is a time for solidarity with other nations across the country as we remember the legacy of residential schools of a not-so-distant past and continue to support one another on our healing journey.

In Eeyou Istchee, we must take the opportunity to celebrate our connection to the land, the sharing of our traditions and the importance of placing the well-being of our family and community as a priority. Our bond to the land, our families and traditions has been central to the preservation of culture and language, a fact being acknowledged as we enter into the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032). Strengthening our identity, culture and language means that we need to further support our connection to the land and our traditional knowledge.

As we look ahead with respect and honour of our histories, it is in the spirit of solidarity with our brothers and sisters across our many territories and an extended hand towards our many non-Indigenous friends and relations that we celebrate with pride a very happy National Indigenous Peoples Day.
