To be able to exploit geothermal resources, three things are necessary: heat, fluid and permeability. The hea
t comes from rocks that are heated by inner-earth processes such as radiogenic decay and the presence of magma. The fluid is present in underground aquifers (that are typically non-potable) and is heated by the surrounding rocks. The permeability (or fractures) in the rock formation allows the fluid to flow easily. This hot fluid is accessed by drilling into the underground reservoir and bringing it to surface where the heat it carries can be distributed via district heating infrastructure (heat exchangers and pipelines). The used reservoir fluid is then delivered back to the underground reservoir to be reheated and reused (thus fully renewable).
