The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Northern cod will increase this year by 55% to 59,000 tonnes. This marks a significant step in the ongoing recovery of Northern cod, which is central to the history and culture of coastal communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The decision was based on the latest science indicating the stock has grown, and ongoing collaboration with partners, harvesters, processors and industry stakeholders. The TAC for capelin will remain unchanged to protect this critical forage species that Northern cod depend on for their recovery. There will continue to be no directed commercial fishery for Northern Gulf cod.
