Picture 100 people with diabetes and at least one additional heart failure risk factor.

Screen them with NT-proBNP and confirmatory evaluation, and 24.6% are found to have unrecognized heart failure. With usual care alone, that number drops to just 0.6%. That difference highlights the potential of systematic biomarker screening to identify heart failure that may otherwise go unrecognized.

The 2026 TARTAN-HF study evaluated NT-proBNP screening in 706 people with diabetes and additional heart failure risk factors, highlighting the potential role of biomarker testing in earlier heart failure assessment.

A single NT-proBNP result tells you where a patient stands today. New research suggests the trend over time may matter just as much.

A 23-year study of 8,486 adults found that rising NT-proBNP nearly doubled the risk of developing heart failure — with an even stronger signal for reduced-pump heart failure, especially in women. The takeaway: NT-proBNP isn't only useful as a one-time snapshot. Changes over time carry real prognostic value.
