SUBC - The UBC Submarine Design Team A UBC submarine design team. We design, build, and race human powered submarines. As a team we design, build, test and race a one person, “wet” submarine.

About
SUBC UBC‘s Human Powered Submarine Team is a team of undergraduate students, mostly engineers from a variety of different departments including mechanical, civil and eng phys. Our primary goal is to provide team members with the opportunity to gain good practical experience. The experience that students gain through this project is not available in a classroom. SUBC allows students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to a practical problem, to gain experience with project and budget management, and to encourage a hands-on design approach that will benefit them in future design challenges. SUBC also has the opportunity to promote post-secondary education through exhibitions and display venues such as Science World and the Vancouver International Boat Show. Our project captures the interest of young students and demonstrates to them the exciting side of science and engineering. Our third goal is to sustain a record of improvement in the project and enter one of the most competitive submarines at the competition.

How much do you know about UBC’s Marine Design Teams? 🌊

SUBC and UBC Sailbot are teaming up for a joint info session! Get to know all the unique things we do, from building our own vessels to diving, competition stories, and so much more.

🚤 SUBC designs and builds human-powered submarines for international competitions.
⛵ UBC Sailbot designs, builds, and tests autonomous sailboats, from construction to system integration.

Both teams bring together students from all backgrounds to gain hands-on technical, teamwork, and leadership experience in marine engineering.

What an incredible summer at eISR 2026 in Gosport, UK!

We’re proud to have represented UBC and finished 7th place in the submarine races!

A huge thank you to the lovely eISR team for their incredible hospitality and for putting together such a fun experience. We had an absolute blast racing, meeting teams from around the world, and making memories along the way.

And of course, a massive thank you to our amazing sponsors and UBC team for making this opportunity possible.
