Following Empower Me’s participation in two community events hosted by Haven on the Queensway in February, we were glad to return on May 1st to deliver an Energy Savings Workshop. 💡

Many participants shared that while they’re eager to participate in programs to learn how to better manage energy use and household efficiency, they often face confusion, barriers, and long waits when reaching out to utility providers.

Through trusted community partnerships and one-on-one support, Empower Me helps bridge that gap. Having someone to listen, explain options clearly, and help make the next step feel a little easier. 🏡

🌸 April was a busy month for Empower Me in British Columbia!

Our busy team of Energy Mentors delivered 26 workshops across different communities, including 7 with New Directions English Language School, connecting with over 300 participants and sharing practical ways to understand energy use and save money at home. 🏠

💡From community centres and neighbourhood associations to classrooms and senior groups, these workshops are all about connecting with people in ways that are accessible and creating space to learn, ask questions, and share experiences.

Thank you to all the community partners who make this work possible! 🤝🌱 We’re excited to see where May takes us next.

From rebates and energy bills to broken windows and cooking costs: participants at our recent workshop at WoodGreen Community Services in Toronto, Ontario came ready with questions about their homes and energy use 💬

Energy Mentors Ayham and Hilal seamlessly juggled questions in English, Spanish, and Turkish to make sure everyone could follow, participate, and feel heard in a safe, welcoming environment 🌱

Our Empower Me team in Calgary joined the International Women’s Day market hosted by the Women in Need Society on March 6th. 💐

Energy Mentors Doni and Alanda, along with Program Coordinator Calvin, hosted a table where we shared energy-saving tips and answered questions about our workshops. We also shared information about programs like the Home Upgrades Program, which Calgarian homeowners and renters can access to make their homes more energy-efficient and lower their energy bills. ⚡

Last month at the The Seattle Public Library, our Washington team hosted an Energy Savings Workshop for a small group of four participants. It was a great reminder that smaller sessions can be just as engaging and lively as those with a bigger turnout. Energy Mentors Tatumn and Thao created a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere where the conversation flowed as participants felt at ease asking honest, practical questions about energy bills, appliance use, home temperatures, and more. 😊

While the workshop was originally planned in Mandarin, the Energy Mentors switched to delivering the workshop in English to accommodate the participants. As Francesca, our Program Manager in Washington, shared: “It was intimate, high quality, and there were so many good questions from the participants!” 🌱💡

Starting 2026 strong in British Columbia. 💪 Between January 9th and January 15th, the B.C. Empower Me team delivered four Energy Savings Workshops in-person and online across Coquitlam, Langley, and Vancouver in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.

Across these four sessions, 100 participants showed up with thoughtful, practical questions. From conversations around thermostat settings and furnace filters to time-of-day pricing and rebates, people were ready to dig in, share their experiences, and learn how energy works in their homes. 🏠

A big shoutout to the Energy Mentors, who truly hit the ground running in January, and thank you to our partners at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and Langley Senior Resources Society for making these workshops possible. 🙌 Two more workshops are coming up in B.C. before the end of the month, and we’re just getting started!

Our longtime community partner S.U.C.C.E.S.S. recently surprised Empower Me’s BC Program Coordinator Anna with a Certificate of Appreciation during our first workshop of the year. 🎉 What a lovely way to kick off 2026!

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. shared that the recognition was to thank Anna and Empower Me for the value the program brings to their clients.

“Many of our members do not know how to read their energy bills, and they are also unaware that government rebate programs are available to support them,” shared Euphony, Program Officer with S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Since Anna started delivering workshops to S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s Wellness and Active Communities seniors’ group in September 2025, over 20 seniors have reached out to Anna for one-on-one support, including for help applying for CleanBC Energy Savings Program rebates and Energy Saving Kits funded by FortisBC and BC Hydro.

Huge thanks to our community partners and our funders in British Columbia for making this work possible: CleanBC, FortisBC, Vancity, City of New Westminster, City of Delta - Local Government. Your support helps turn trusted relationships into real, practical help for people in B.C. communities.

We want to extend our warmest wishes to all the participants, community organizations, and partners we’ve had the pleasure of working with this year.

In 2025, we delivered hundreds of workshops across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Washington. A huge thank you to our community partners, funders, and Energy Mentors for your partnership and commitment to empowering communities through energy education and supporting this work.

Time to rest, recharge, and look ahead to a bright year.🌟

We held our first ever Empower Me workshop in Ontario last month with the Malvern Family Resource Centre in Scarborough 🎉

This milestone came after months of listening to and learning from community groups across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and kicks off our new series of Empower Me workshops in the GTHA shaped by local voices!

Energy Mentor Ayham and Program Manager Karla set the tone, creating a welcoming space where participants could ask questions, share experiences, and learn together. After the workshop, one participant told us: “I got lots of information on stuff I did not know about and I will be very happy to share this information with my community.”

Shathvahi from Malvern Family Resource Centre also shared: “This was new information for a lot of our clients, so everything about it was helpful. It was also practical tips they could use immediately.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and a huge shoutout to Emmanuel Taiwo from the University of Toronto’s Impact Lab, whose ongoing research on energy affordability in vulnerable GTHA communities helped spark the outreach and planning that made these sessions possible. 🙌

We’re just getting started and we cannot wait to bring many more workshops to communities in Ontario 💡

🪔 Happy Diwali to all those celebrating from the Empower Me team! 🎆

Energy Mentors Esh*ta and Lubna and Program Manager Kylie had a memorable time celebrating the Festival of Lights at DIYAfest on Friday! ✨ It was wonderful connecting with so many community members, and the team especially loved seeing so many young people eager to learn about how home energy systems work!
